If I have a 1975 CJ 5, what years steering box can I use?? The reason I ask is that I know of a box from a CJ 7 that is for sale. Are they interchangable??
    Thanks

I believe almost any saginaw power steering box will bolt up to your mount. I too have a 75 that had the old ross manual box. I went to a pick in pull when I lived in LA and found one off an late 70s early 80s camaro/firebird. Its only a 3 bolt, but it works. I wanted one off a truck, like a J truck, but all the pick your part junkyards in LA have crappy old american cars and imports. It bolted up just fine. All I needed to do is get the correct pitman arm and bell coupler for the steering shaft. I haven't verified this at all but it looks like almost all the saginaw boxes use the same bolt pattern dimensions. I would imagine that a cj7 box would be right at home.

Does the 75 still have the one piece cast steering box mount? Or does it have the 2 piece pressed mount?

If it is the 1 piece cast then you can use a steering box off a TJ. It is a direct bolt in. Just be sure to get the pitman arm as well.

If it's really a '75, it will have either a 4-bolt Saginaw power box or a 3-bolt Saginaw manual box. Both of these use the cast bracket, either with 4 or 3 tabs respectively.

The stamped brackets started in 1976 with the new frame.

I believe that all the Saginaw boxes have the same bolt pattern, with either 3 or 4 bolts. You can even use a 3-bolt box on a 4-bolt bracket, and vice-versa, and leave out the 4th bolt.

I think you'll also find that the diameter of the input shaft coupling can be different and the pitman arm key can be in a different location on different boxes. This should be easy to check by inspection when you pull the box. Most of the Jeep boxes should be interchangeable, and the GM car and truck boxes. I know that the S10 box, for example, can replace the Wagoneer box, and the Wagoneer bax can be used in place of the smaller Jeep boxes.
