I have been wanting to paint my CJ6 ever since I got it.
I did the top 4 years ago, stripped to bare metal.

Now is the time to do the body as I needed to repair the hat channel under the floor.

This is the jeep as I got it.

This is after I painted the top.

I do have some picture of me doing the but not on the computer.

Started with front end sheet metal.
    Fenders, hood and grill.
Sanded off the brown paint and most of the OEM white paint.

And the set up my sandblast booth.

And sandblast down to the bare metal.

Got to doo a little work on the fender, thay were in better shape than I thought.

Not much cooler than a hardtop six. It's like being a fat kid AND playing the tuba.

I hate those hat channels. Jeep engineer fail. My jeep is beat up, I kinda like it that way...but the hat channels are rusted out, so I needa take the tub off and fix 'em...and If I'm gonna do that it doesn't make sense to not do the rest...but I want to keep it's history/character, not make a nice clean street/show Jeep.

Andrew - what sandblaster, media and compressor (some specs is what I am looking for) are you running. Got a buddie that is thinking of doing it with my compressor...

I am just not sure I want the sand in every opening of my body...

The sandblaster I am using is one sold by Harbor freight, It is a 80# pressure blaster with 3/32" nozzle, I did make some changes. put a pipe cross in the bottom with a plug in the bottom port instede of the tee that it came with. This make it eazy to drain it if you get something that plugs it up. Also extened the valve with a piece of pipe, this get you away from the blast back of the sand also makes it eazy on the back, no stooping over.
You can see the blaster here.

For the air compressor I am using a Saylor Beall 5hp 60 gallon unit. It puts out about 15 CFM @175 psi. It runs all the time that I am blasting, anything that is smaller you just might burn up. It takes about 45 min to use up a full pot of sand.
I also run the air through a air dryer made by Belair belairtech.net This drys the air so the sand does not clump up and plug the nozzle.

The sand I use is sandblast sand, I get it a Lowes in a 100# sack and can reuse it about 4 time then it gets to fine to do any work.
Run it through a screen wire to take out any large items that might get stuck in the nozzle.

For protection I ware a pair of coveralls long sleaves, a blasting hood sold by Eastwood, it is made of a canvas material and has a built in hard hat, heavy rubber rubber gloves that come up your arm.
You can see the glove and hood in this picture.
I also use a resperatior with good filters.
You can see in the picture above.

Use a pair of old shoes or boots because you will never all of the sand out of them.

I do all of my blasting in a tarped in spot as this contains most of the sand so it can be cleaned up, tarps on 4 sides and open on the top to let the fine dust blow away. or 3 side and a building.
    Hope this helps.

I can get pictures of the air compressor and air dryer if somebody wants to see them.

Thanks Andrew - I have the Craftsmen 80 Gal 5.4 HP Pro model. It's rated at 12.8 CFM at 175 so it's close. Not sure if that diff is enough to cause an issue.

How long did it take to blast the tub (we have a 6 that we are looking to do this on as well)?

I worked on it for 3 days on and off. So maybe about 8 hours.
Now i sanded off the heavy coat of paint first with 36 or 40 grit because it was going to take to long to blast it off. The factory paint on the inside came off with no problem, did not have to sand it.
Here it is after sanding but before blasting. [IMG]

As to the aircompressor you will loose some CFM because of your elevation.
A good rule of thumb is you loose 3% of your CFM for every 1000 feet of elevation.
So what is your elevation in Falcon CO.
    I am about 5500 ft.

I'm about 7K in elevation here. I figure we will be doing it over a couple weeks as we work on a section at a time. Blast, cut, weld, next pannel section, repeat to end of jeep.

I had thought about a blast cabinet for the parts I do, but those who have seen my shop know I have to much junk in the way as it is.

Do you know if the soda blasting uses less CFM or is better in any way?

soda blasting uses about the same CFM but you can only use it once, as it breaks down into a fine powder.and it leaves a film that has to be cleaned off.
    The soda is not cheep,
I have a blast cabnet for the small parts, it sets outside under a shed roof.

That is some fine looking work, sir. The new hat channels are great. Maybe I need to trailer mine up and haul it down to you for some love. :D Has to be a bit warmer to work on down there than up here right now.
