SSDutch - a 1964 CJ6

No - neither the red or white is TSC paint, so it's not returnable...

 

Pink would certainly make my 8 year old daughter happy...

But no - most definitely not white, red or any combinations thereof...

 

Well....OK. I thought I would be able to keep the color a secret until after it was painted but I'm just no Billy...R)

I wanted a 60's color - one that just immediately said "old Jeep". I know red and white were on the chips back then but those colors are just so popular around here that it wasn't unique enough. Especially white - 90% of 'glass bodied Jeeps are left white here in MI it seems.

The color had to contrast well with the black softop and white wheels. This ruled out 2 of my favorites - either a sea-foam green or Prairie Gold (light Yellow).

Animal came to mind - and the choice became clear: Champagne Gold. This is the color that Dutch was originally and I've always thought it was cool. I've also yet to see a CJ6 in it - while I've seen most other colors.

I traded some PM's with Billy as I remembered he didn't use the Jeep Champagne gold. I did some web searches, and came up with this '69 Mach 1 Mustang and loved the color:



Good thing as FLAPs didn't have the right Jeep chips but had that color on a '69 Ford chip.

So there you go...1969 Ford Champagne Gold.

 

I learned one thing today...

It's impossible to photochop Champagne Gold onto a Jeep...

 

Allergies and wind killed my day today -- I got SSDutch mummified but that's it.

Sorry guys...I was disappointed as well. But the thought of sneezing with a respirator on wasn't a fun one...

Hoping to snag a day away from work this week to get back at it.

 

It does suck to do that. R)

 

OK - first round of primer on. Lessons learned:

- My cheapie water filter is not enough - not when I see water spitting out of the air connection at the spray gun. Seemed to be more moisture in my lines than normal tonight.

- This primer and mineral spirits didn't get along - it made the paint clump up. Not fun to clean up.

- I need one of those little touch up guns - there are some places I just can't get this thing.

- I need a 90 deg connection for the air hose at the gun - I kept dragging the air hose though the paint.

- Getting the right combo of spray pattern/amount of air/amount of paint is tricky. Not until I was almost done was I getting a nice wet coat.

- I guess gravity feed means you don't shoot upside down...will have to rattle can the bottom of the cowl.

- My butch repairs look a whole lot better with paint on them.

I ordered a fold-n-tumble rear seat for the 66, gonna have the fronts upholstered to match...getting a head ache trying to figure out what color to paint it...your PINK is starting to sound goodR)

Yea - I was thinking I already have one. I used a "whip hose" to build my inflation tool for the Jeep. I can just pull that apart and use it.

 

Spray size doesn't matter...my biggest handicap is the sheer size of the gun - with the rollcage in there I just can't get the gun in certain places.

Even a smaller paint cup would help alot.

I used to be able to get spray bombs custom mixed at FLAPs...but their machine broke and they didn't replace it. Gonna try NAPA...
