SSDutch - a 1964 CJ6

Well I had fun today with the webcam hooked up in the garage - I think we had 8 or 9 guys in there at one point, it was a virtual garage party..

Progress was the pedal hanger and arms installed, the new master cylinder in, and the large pieces of the transmission cover:





Next up is some welding on the last cover piece, a bit of sheet metal fab to make up for the PO's steering column swap, and then looking at some carpet.

 

Looks good Mike. Too lazy to read back; that pedal cross shaft is for an 'A1, isn't it? How tight is it?

 

The shaft is what was on there, the bracket/tube is the A1 piece. There's still a bit of pedal slop - but I think the shaft has some wear. I don't have it all connected/finalized yet to tell for sure. I do like the A1 bracket better than the original piece though.

 

I was showing the pedals themselves -- these are the arms.

 

Allergies kicked in in a major way this weekend so I was moving much slower than I was hoping.

Managed to get all pedals sandblasted and painted, the tranny cover finished (it's not great but won't catch your eye so much anymore), and finished with my newspaper patterns for carpet:



Plan is to get some indoor/outdoor carpet cut to the patterns and then get it edged with vinyl or bound for a more finished look. Tranny cover will go down over the carpet for a nicer look around the shifters.

 

so Mike what's the plan for "molding" the carpet around the tranny hump?, this is one of those back burner projects for my rig. I'm even considering attaching some sealed sound proofing/insulation to the carpet as well

Plan is to cut the carpet to fit and put it in. Tranny cover will go on top, otherwise whatever happens happens.

 

Rear carpet in. The pattern approach worked well.

 

It's a black automotive carpet from Menards. I like that it's really short-nap, lightweight, and the back isn't abrasive. Looks like it might also breath well. I bought an 11' x 6' piece for ~$27.

I'm hoping that all things considered I won't need to snap it down. It won't go anywhere with the rollcage over it - so as long as the wind doesn't get underneath it I should be fine.

 

That looks really nice Mike. I've shyed away from carpet for mant reasons, but I'm starting to rethink....

 

I really thought about all the alternatives as well - but for me carpet was the cheapest/best way to not just be living right on the paint. I'm worried that my paint job isn't the greatest and will scratch easily - so this should protect it.

It probably wouldn't be a good idea for a rig that would see heavier trail duty, but if I'm honest about how SSD will get used it'll be alot of road time, beach trips, etc with maybe a few trail runs a year.

I do plan on floormats as well - not sure what type yet as I'd like something rubber but with some kind of perforations so they'd breath. I won't want to trap moisture under them.

 

Well yea - there's that aspect too. The floor in SSDutch has been patched with metal that's structurally solid but has some major pitting.

The carpet will mask alot of "stuff"....

 

Decent weekend progress...

Got the front carpet cut/fit, then all of it dropped off for edge binding.

Re-did the PO's floor patch after the steering column swap - replaced his 3 hunks of metal slop-welded together with one piece.

Got the rest of the seatbelts installed.

Got the seats reinstalled.







Sat in it again - first time in...over a year I think:



Got a bug to work out with the horn - it's sticking. I wonder if that brass disc that goes under the rubber horn button needs to be replaced?

 

Hi lift jack sandblasted, painted, and mounted.

The rest of the jack goes under the rear seat in heavy vinyl bags. If I'm on a run where I think I'll be more likely to need it I can always go back to my bolt-through-the-spare-tire approach.

 

Picked up the finished carpet today:
