I'm doing a front disc brake swap and the bracket is pretty beefy. New studs came in the kit, I'm sure they're longer but I'm hoping to get by with what's already on there. Do you guys think this is enough thread engagement? Would using red threadlocker instead of the lock washers be advisable? I could have full engagement that way.

I'm thinking of waiting to put longer ones in until it needs balljoints or something.

My personal belief is that the MFG. engineers typically know whats best , so I would install the new studs that they supplied. Also , they are new steel & not rust deteriorated like the OEM's.

I ended up ditching the lock washers and used high strength threadlocker. The nuts are fully covering the thread now and they're distorted thread type locking ones as well. In a couple years I'd like to rebuild this axle and maybe even add a locker, at that point I'll put the longer studs in but I'm feeling pretty good about it for now.

That works or safety wire, my Dana 25 wound up getting button head bolts from the inside.

Edited: thought this was a 25/27 normally with bolts from the outside. 30 is different.

My understanding - you need at least two complete threads exposed beyond the nut to achieve the rated strength. The nuts shown are locknuts and they are one-use-only devices. Get new ones. If it had a washer originally, I would leave it in. Kinda suspect those are not split lock washers but hardened (grade 8) washers? This is a safety-critical application - don't skimp on time or parts!

I'll take a closer look, I did have some exposed thread after but it looked like 1 thread, maybe 1.5 on some. We'll see...

And those washers were split, and I will pick up some new lock nuts! Thanks

The parts book shows hex head bolts, not studs, for the spindles. Maybe it's wrong - the closed knuckle spindles used bolts. I looked for the nut and washer to hold the spindles on, but could not find either - it's not shown in the book. Is it possible these studs thread out from the back side of the knuckle? That would make replacement a lot easier.

They changed it to studs, I'm not sure when. Maybe it's a dana 30 thing? But they're pressed in from the other side :(

My book is '74-80, so it's either wrong or must have been after. The closed knuckle axles were all gone starting in 1974. There were only open 30s and open 44s/44HDs for Jeep in that era.
