As far as I can tell my ‘66 has 11” brakes from a 73-74. (That’s the shoes I bought and used for the past year) Now I’m wanting to hook up the parking brake and install self adjusters. Kind of don’t know where to start with the self adjusters. I think the parking brake attachment will be straight forward but I really need a diagram and or tutorial on the adjusters. This is the only Intermediate parts on my early so I’m not wanting to buy a manual. Thanks for your help. Scott B.

Self adjuster hardware is available thru your local parts house and can come in kit form.
This is a scan of the front set-up, but rear is basically the same excluding the parking brake strut and lever.

That should do it. Thanks. I have the parts but was just guessing at the assembly.

Not telling you different, but your shoe hold down hardware and the slide on adjuster lever are indicative of 10" brakes, not 11" brakes.

You know how these old things are. Especially this one was pieced together when I bought it.

I have no idea how this works but the adjuster does move the screw when I give the cable a little tug.

The parking brake wasn’t as straight forward as I hoped. Any help here?

You're missing parts. A lever arm attaches to the top of the rear shoe for the cable to pull on and a spreader bar that mounts between the shoes just below the wheel cylinder.

From this web page: https://www.4wheelparts.com/b/jeep-replacement-parts/vintage-brake-parts/_/N-cm7ba, You'll need items #18, #19, and the #1 that goes on the end of #19. Usually there is some sort of horseshoe clip and spring washer holding #18 into the brake pad.

    Here's a diagram with names:

Here's a picture generic picture of the parking brake assembled (minus the adjusting hardware):

Pulling the cable pulls the arm into the spreader bar and forces the shoes apart.

Your brakes are self energizing and pivot on the top anchor. If you shift them forward, you will see the adjusting arm lift. As there is more wear in the shoes, the brakes will shift more and more till the arm catches a notch on the adjuster wheel and rotates it, adjusting the brakes out slightly. The adjusting only happens in reverse and repeats itself, maintaining a "one click" adjustment through the life of the shoes.

BTW, the hardware is Ford. You have a mixed bag of Wagner (early CJ keepers) and bendix (later Ford springs and adjusting hardware). Not an issue, but if one of the keepers lets go, you will have to replace it with a newer coil spring style one.

Do you have rear backing plates that have the holes for the parking brake cables ?

This is the right test. Look at the '74 TSM and it will show you one side. The other side is the mirror image. When you pull and release the cable, the pawl will climb the tooth wheel and turn it one or two notches. It is vitally important that this LENGTHEN the self-adjuster. These adjusters have opposite handedness on each side of the Jeep.

What Jim is seeing - the shoe hold-downs are wrong for 11" Bendix - they look like 10". Possibly the PO used 10" parts on the 11" brakes. You also replaced the lever, and the original lever looks wrong.

JMO - I would replace all the hardware, including the springs. You can buy a hardware kit that includes all this stuff. The horseshoe clip is in the hardware kit, and possibly available separately. I'd also fit new shoes - those shoes look thin enough to change.

You need the parking brake levers, equalizer struts and springs, plus backing plates with a hole for the cable. The lever and strut are not commonly available as service parts, but I recall somebody online has them - maybe a Bronco site? Looking at the link above, apparently they are available from Omix-Ada (!) This part for Delco brakes might work for the strut spring More Information for CARLSON H13362

Anyone know first hand that the #1 spring shown is part of the '73 parking brake? It's not on the site shopping list once put in the year of the Jeep.

I could not find it specifically for the Bendix brakes. The part I linked above for Delco brakes may work. I think I looked at a '78-ish Wagoneer for the listing.

It's just an anti-rattle spring. They are often oval shaped and slide over the bar like the blue one in the assembled picture. Oddly, they don't seem to be included in the small parts kits.

They look like these, but I'm not sure if either of these are the correct part:
They are pretty generic, so if they slide over the strut bar, they may work fine. The ones Timgr listed would most likely work too.

    Anti-Rattle - HA!
Like I'll ever hear that rattle over the 45 bigger ones!

Even then, I would not leave it out and let the strut flop around. Keeps the strut lined up on the lever. Might be ok, but maybe not.

What jpflat said. This is a 10" setup (left rear) for reference.

Buildflycrash, if and when you go to the correct hardware, I would really like to have your slide on adjuster levers as backups for mine.

Yes. I think I’ll only need the brake lever parts now.
