    Guys,

I got a CJ box off ebay the other day, and it was complete with pitman arm and original style stamped 2-peice mount (not sure what year though).

My question is, do I try to use this mount? I haven't had a chance to compare the mount to my frame to see if it is even feasible (and I'm at work now, so I can't run out and see...don't tell my boss I'm on the web :) ). If it will work, are there any pros or cons to this mount? I've heard that the 2-peice mount is weak, but it seems that that statement came from the rock-basher group.

I'm not above fabbing something else, just curious because I've searched and couldn't find anything on this type of mount.

    TIA

I'd use a more solid mount. You heard right on that mount being prone to cracking, and not just on the rock bashing Jeeps. They used that mount on '76-86 CJ's and there are several companies that make bolt on upgrades for that application. You might do a search or contact McRuff on a better mount set up, or both. I have a couple of McRuff's mounts and can say they are excellent quality. I could've easily built them myself but for the cost and time and the quality of his it was worth every penny. Nickmil

Make sure you brace the box to the opposite frame rail. That's what really helps.

10-4 guys. Thanks for the responses.

One other question though. I've noticed the factory mount puts the saginaw box at a slight downward angle. Do you suppose this was for shaft clearance issues, or does it keep the tie rods from binding? I kind of like it because it puts the bottom of the box up a littel more out of harms way.

I've notice most people here mount their boxes parrallel with the ground. Do most people do it this way to eliminate the need to modify the stock crossmember, or is there another issue that I don't see?

    Thanks again...

Here is how I mounted mine after looking at what others had done. Notice the bracket for the steering brace that goes to the passenger side frame rail.

thats a mount from a jeepster right? thats what i am using too. i think its a great setup. it keeps the box and mount below the upper edge of the frame rail, which was necesary for me to fit my snowplow frame on. thats a greater angle than i mounted mine though. were you able to use all 4 mounting bolts with it at that angle? i'd imagine one bolt hole would be off the rail at that angle.

Not sure what the mount came from, but all four bolts go right in. The box is actually going to be replaced by a PSC unit since I want four mounting points and hydro assist. The frame in the front is 3/16 box and I have tubing to insert into the holes, so they do not crush. It also has a gusset now going over the top to mount the winch and reinforce the mount area. No picture of the actual plate, but the Pacifico pattern is what it looks like. I had to notch the winch plate for the steering box, since I wanted the winch as low as possible. With the hysteer, the drag link needs to be as high as possible and I am getting the idea that the frame is going to need to be notched for the tie rod. I am shooting for a low stance.
