I think you will dislike the turn radius with this setup. I had to change mine to a "Y" link and abandon the outer hole to get back to my original turn radius.

Thought the dana 30 gives you a better turning radius?

Depends what box you have. The second hole in the knuckle arm adds leverage to the steering at the expense of more drag link travel. If the steering box you’re using doesn’t have any extra travel to give, your turning radius will actually be less after the conversion from a single-hole knuckle. If the steering box can travel enough to match the D30’s travel, then there’s no problem.

I’m thinking of getting me a set of 78-79 Dana 30 and Dana 44 for my 62 cj5 and replace my TC with a Dana 20 to be able to use the Dana 44. It will be a road/ touring jeep so the gears i found with axles are 3.54. Unfortunately I can’t find any in the higher carrier. But according to Novak site 3.54 will give me cruise speed of 70 at 2800 rpm.

    any thoughts on these axles?

The 78-79 rear axle will be the AMC 20 that nobody really wants. You'll need a 72-75 rear axle for a centered 44.

True. I was thinking of full floating kit for 44, but I’d need to find a Dana 30 in the upper carrier since I currently have 5.38. I don’t want the crawling gears. Not climbing Moab or Mount Fuji. The Dana 30 I can get for 200.00 with disc.

Buy the 30 and put a locker in the front with a new ring and pinion of your choice. Do it once and be done.
The rear likely will end up scrap.

What engine is in the rig now to have 5.38s a 4cyl won't pull 3.54s.

    I have a 225 V6. And the axles are from 76-86.
Thought about trying to change the carrier and gears myself. No nothing about buying or installing carriers and ring and pinion. Any advice on this would be great!!! Been doing a lot of research on axles. I could swap carrier in 44 (to keep offset )as well but that’s on jeep now and install float kit from Herm.

Same problem here. I’m planning to go back to the setup off the D27 and not use the outside hole on the 30.

guys, I called tom woods today to get a driveshaft made, but they weren't sure which joint I have.
    100% stock drivetrain...
    I had a dana 18 to a dana 27 axle.
    i now have a dana 18 to a dana 30 axle.

u joint on several internet sights state 1310 is the proper u joint. however, a few state that 1210 is the proper one for the front of my 1970 cj5.

they can make me a 1210/1310, or make me a 1310/1310 and sell me a new 1310 yoke for the output on the T-case. I'm fine with a 1210/1310, but at 320 bucks, I want it 100% right.

The 1210 is that tiny u-joint that came with the v-6s. If your front joints are the same, and they are the same as the rear joints, they are 1310/1310.

Resized_20210720_163545.jpeg well, looks like I've got a small ujoint on the tcase and a big u-joint on the dana 30. length would be fine, 29.062" from surface to surface, as tom woods measures it

Steering box........is it the Ross box that does or does not give enough travel, depending on which box you have? I think I would go Saginaw along with the D30 swap. Just curious if there is a travel issue with saginaw box variants or if you're just referencing Ross boxes.

Before you order the new drive shaft. The yoke for the front of the TC is available for the larger 1310 u-joint. I swapped mine so that all u-joints are the same.

I tried doing this with mine, when I did my Dana 30 swap and it hit the SM420 I swapped in years ago. I called back Tom Woods and they built me a high breed with the large and small joints.
