My guess, highly unlikely and most of all, not practical at that time. Here's just a few hurdles to accomplish what you're wonderin' ...
Standard spare tire carrier bracket abandoned and replaced with the Renegade type carrier. Might have been tough getting the factory to leave out the standard side carrier bracket and even tougher filling in the side mounting holes.
Replace main and engine wiring harness with Renegade harnesses. Not as tough as above but why would anyone want to go through the trouble?

I would have to agree, I was just wondering out-loud.

You could duplicate one in the way that many GTO Judges or other rare musclears are made. To looks only but not down to every last little detail like the wiring harness, etc. Guessing it was nigh impossible with it being a factory option that included special stuff.

My Renegade 1 was built August 1970, titled 1971. Has a tailgate, rear gas tank, charcoal hood center, red in main color, 15x8 KH steel wheels.

here's another tid bit on my Sept. 1970 built R1. I just read the 1972 color codes. My color code is 226, which is listed as Presidential Red in 1972. When I can I will get the VIN and post it. Will that help decipher if mine was really an R1 from the factory?

In short, no. The R1 didn't have a special VIN. But there are others ways to tell, which is why this topic comes up often. A search on this site will lead you to some clues. Or post some pics and folks here will probably help.

Mike, here is a pic of my wheel well pad on my Ren II. There are two snaps, one on each end of the pad.

I would have said Orange and the Yellow-Green, whatever they called it. Not Plum - I don't remember seeing a Plum Jeep in '72, and I was spending a lot of time at the dealership then. Maybe the factory sales literature will provide another data point, if you can find it.

Here's the '72 PPG color sheet showing 4 different 999 code colors http://www.tcpglobal.com/aclchip.aspx?image=1972-jeep-pg01.jpg Plum poly, Baja Yellow, Mint Green, Riverside Orange - recall that the colors were named after the racing events at the time. Maybe no one wanted a purple Jeep, and that's why I don't remember any Plum ones :?

how were you able to determine the month and year of manufacture and the proper color of your jeep?

If a 1970 CJ5 was red, would it then, by definition not be a renegade? I thought the funky colors only started in 71 or 72

If you have the VIN, we can get pretty close for you.

Was your Jeep repainted? There was a member here from Iowa, I think thunderbolt, that had a Renegade he painted red. Does your Jeep have a paint and trim code on the firewall, in engine compartment, passenger side?

Thanks for the response. The paint has been touched up, however, it really seems that this jeep was President Red.

The Jeep came out of Oregon. If the paint and trim code was a sticker under the Kaiser Jeep Corporation metal tag, it's gone. I can see where a sticker had been in place.. Is that the right place to look or is that data found some where else?

The VIN number is 8305017 360041

I would love any help you can provide in determining what this should be.
    Thanks!

Thanks to your hard work and document, I now know that my engine was built March 30th 1968 and my Jeep was probably built in early Aug 1969

My 71 Renegade I is red with the charcoal hood center. Mine was built in August of 1970, but titled and licensed as a 1971. My uncle baught the Jeep new, so, we are pretty sure that this is how it left the factory.

Early '71's seem to be Renegade I's instead of Renegade II's, we've seen a few examples here. Does yours have a tailgate? How about a Paint-Trim tag (care to share the numbers)?

Would you mind sharing the VIN for the VIN project (either in the VIN thread or through PM)?

Mine does have the tailgate. Here we go...... Paint code on my 71 Renegade I is 226, Trim code is 340, and the VIN is 8305017366928. My Jeep is licensed and titled as a 1971 with an August 1970 build date

my 2nd ren1 was rolled out in june 1970, purple,, but also used to have a smog pump on it ,the sticker says, applicable to 71 model year new vehicle standards, as i see it 71 was the time all cars HAD to have emissions devices on them. also remember ralph nadder? he was fighting hard to ban cj5s for rollovers, and gas tanks under the seats. amc i think knew it was coming moved the tank for 1970, added smog pump, and later built the cj6 . to my recolection..
