Good day ladies & gentlemen, I am reaching out to all who are restoring an original 1970 Renegade 1. The original R1 upholstery was black vinyl with inserts with narrow white pinstripes.

I've found a source for original style upholstery kits that are manufactured in the good ol' United States! :flag:

These kits are made with SMS upholstery materials. The white pinstripe insert material is no longer available except by minimum order from SMS. This makes it sort of unreasonable to produce 1 complete holsters kit. That being said, I am seeking at least 4 others who are willing to commit to purchase an upholstery kit from this US :flag: source so that we can all enjoy new correct upholstery in our prized early Renegades.

What do you say guys & gals! Let's dress 'em up right.

I would be willing to commit to a kit for the 1970 R1 I picked up a few weeks ago. Just a few questions to get things going:

Before ordering, is there a way to confirm the material supplied by SMS is the correct shade of black vinyl with the pinstripes at the correct spacing?
What would be included in a kit?
Is there a rough estimate for the cost of a kit?

Back in 2010 I requested samples of the 2 different black with white pinstripe offerings that SMS had available. The narrower pinstripe was nearly an exact match to my existing original 1970 upholstery inserts. I take into consideration that my old upholstery may have suffered some changes over time so the original white stripes were only slightly wider than the sample I received.
I would consider this material to be an almost exact match to the original if not truly an exact match.

i will have to confirm the current price for the kit which may change if I get a bigger response or if it takes extended time to get enough people committed.

I might be interested depending on price. I assume both front and rear seats?

Ok guys, here's the whole deal. Once the manufacturer has a monetary commitment from 4 people he will place the order for the material from SMS. The material special order will take approximately 2-3 months. Then when the material arrives he will start mailing the upholstery kits with the correct pinstripe inserts. Then he will ship them to you as they are completed.

You can go to his website to see what I'm talking about. www.jeepsterguru.com choose the Jeepster commando tab & scroll down to view. There you can get pricing also.

I purchased a kit from him the end of last year. The kit I purchased is of the highest quality but it's made with the incorrect pinstripe material. This is my motivation to get other interested owners involved in this. I want to purchase a correct kit myself.
So I have done the legwork as far as confirming the correct pinstripe.

So it's either $850 or $1,000 for a set, is that correct? What was incorrect with the set you ordered?

Oh no. Scroll down & you'll see the black with pinstripe front is $300 & the rear is $350 or vice versa. So $650 for the set plus shipping.
On the kit I received the pinstripe is about 3/8" apart. The correct pinstripe is about 1/8" apart. That is why I am trying to get enough orders put together so he can get the correct material for our R1 restorations.

Hmmm, when I look at that website the black with white striped front single is $300. Since it says single not pair I assume it is only one, is that incorrect?

Hey Zoomer, good catch. I'm checking with the manufacturer to confirm & will post the answer to your question soon.
I know the kit I received is for 2 front seats & the back seat.

i will be putting my kit up for sale at some point when I know we have enough people on board to order the other pinstripe.

Well guys, I got clarification from the manufacturer. The ad is correct. It is single seat for the fronts.

The he challenge is the special order material is more expensive & there is a minimum order requirement.

i still want to pursue this so let's keep this thread alive.

Is this the correct original seat fabric? This is closer to 1/2" black stripe with 1/8" white stripe.

Wow, are you sure that is original to your vehicle? That is what the vendor has currently & can get without special order. My seats are original in mine but I have the much narrower spacing between the stripes.

I am wondering if there was a switch in upholstery during that transition year? Hmmm.
that being said, I have a set that I would be happy to sell you that will match your existing stripes. I haven't figured out the picture thing yet so if you want me to email you pics of the kit I have you can PM me your email address.

I'm not sure, that is why I'm asking. It sounds like yours are more tighly spaced, can you please show a picture with something for scale? Anyone else with a Renegade want to chime in?

From the research I've done so far, I think the later Renegade I's and all Renegade II's had the wider spaced stripes. Mnemonic's Renegade I has wider spaced stripes. I wonder if Carter (or someone else) can confirm what he has to help verify what was original in the early Renegade I's? Maybe we can determine what was original when. What's the build date of your's Bert?

Sorry for the delay in getting my pics out. My computer is in the shop & my tech skills are sorely lacking. I have pics to post however.
My build is September 1969. My upholstery stripes are narrow.

Well I looked through the photos I had taken when pulling it apart and only could find this one of the rear. I do have the seats but they are not easily at hand. It will be this weekend before I can get any other photos. They are the tighter/narrower pattern like Honeywells.

Very interesting! It appears from this small sampling of original seats that there is two different styles of pinstripe. SMS currently has the wide space stripe available but can make the narrow space stripe with a minimum order.

Well, if there are others that want to get in on this it would be good to hear from you.

To ad to the confusion, my seats have both styles :? Both passenger and drive have the "thin" striping on the bottom, while the passenger side has the "wide" striping on the upper cushion. Both of the bottom cushions seem to be original as the fabric for each is of similar condition, and the hog clips are rusty. (ignore the drivers side upper cushion, not sure what that thing is)
