Rear main seal

    Does anybody off hand know where I can get a rear main seal for the V6? Going to put a clutch (LUK) in this week so I may as well do the rear main as well as the motor mounts. Anybody suggest anything else?

    FLAPS? Should be easy to get as Felpro. Pan gasket. Throwout bearing. Can you see the timing chain with the pan off on a V6?

    Advance Auto carries the Felpro line; AutoZone = Victor Reinz. I got my Rear main seal at Advance. :beer:

    Tim: yes, but just a little bit at the bottom.

    I got mine at NAPA. They gave me the choice of original rope style or neoprene. Both were in stock. It turned out I didn't need to change it. The leak was coming from the right head gasket.

    Which one the neoprene or the original rope? What's the difference?

    did the neoprene when I rebuilt the motor. had a heck of a time removing the old rope thou (didn't remove the block from jeep or remove the crank).

    Been a while, but IIRC the rope style is cheaper and hard to install without removing the crank. Overhaul kits usually provide the rope style, and you have to pay extra for neoprene. Neoprene is the more modern type, and can be pressed in to the seal groove without a special tool fairly easily by removing the rear main cap. I think the FSM will advise to loosen the other main caps, but you may not need to. Possible (likely?) your V6 has the rope style.

    Also - you'll need a good torque wrench, and be sure to put the neoprene seal in with the lip facing forward. A Felpro package will contain instructions. I only had one occasion in the past when I needed to remove the rope seal from an engine still in the car. I used a small wooden dowel to tap on one end and force it out.

    There is a special tool for installing the rope-type seal whit the crank still in the block; it has a wire "chinese finger trap" -type dela on one end and a T-handle on the other. You feed it up and over the crank, insert the end of the rope seal and pull it through until it comes out the other end.

    I think I'd go with neoprene myself...
