where on the tranny/t-case is the switch for this light?

I have the reverse switch and another switch on the opposite side, but I am not sure what this one is for, is it the switch for the "4wd" or "emergency drive" light on the speedo combo guage?

Sorry I have no clue, but do you mind posting a pic of the reverse (or neutral safety switch)? The PO pulled all the wires and I cannot locate it on my 73 with a T14 Trans...

The e-drive light only comes with the Quadratrac full-time 4wd. There's no 4wd light on a '72 CJ. There's a reverse light switch, and some later T15s have a TCS (transmission control spark) switch.

I dont understand then why does the dash assembly have an "emergency drive" light located on the speedo cluster. here is a pic of the factory speedo, I lit the light to show you what I have.

I am using the t-case from the 74. the light was wired in the dash wiring I just was wondering what triggered it. I will take a pic this afternoon of the backside of the tranny to show you guys what I am looking at

I'd think the TCS switch is on the left front (remember that the rails move opposite to the position of the shifter knob) and reverse is on the back right. Test with an ohmmeter - a TCS will go open in third. Retards the spark in top gear. Should be specific to CA Jeeps only, at least till '78. The switch may be there to plug the hole, but the wiring and engine-mounted solenoid will not be.

Believe me - only the QuadraTrac used an Emergency Drive light. The hole you refer to is clearly marked "QuadraTrac Light" in my '77 manual. The QuadraTrac was used from '76-79 in a CJ-7 equipped with an automatic transmission. It indicates locking the transfer case differential (between the driveshafts), giving the same behavior as conventional locked-up 4wd. These are probably service parts, or junkyard parts from later CJs, since the '72 or '74 had no provision for lighting a 4wd light, and the e-drive didn't apply to CJs until '76. There may have been a 4wd indicator on later CJs/Wranglers with the TF904 and TF999, but I'm not as familiar with those models.

Some of the later model 20 transfers had switches that threaded into the top of the front output housing and were activated by the shift rails. That would be for the 4 wheel drive light. The emergency drive lights were usually on Q-track equipped CJ-7's as mentioned. Is it possible someone put a later model cluster in your Jeep? Nickmil.

I have a 72 cj5 No lite on my cluster. I think your cluster has been changed becaus of the "Unleaded only" stenciled on the speedo. The 72's were still setup for Leaded gas. IIRC

ahhhhhhhh, I see, I never thought about someone swapping out the speedo cluster, do you happen to have a pic of your speedo cluster? Im just wanting to see what the 72 should look like.

I have 2 orange plastic plugs that go down into the shift rail spots, are these the places where the later 4wd switch goes? if so why would there be 2?

I dunno, I was thinking it was original and wanted to get it back that way, but if not Im not worried about it. I may wire it anyways just so everything works. im funny that way

I think you are right, I just got done rewiring the dash, I found that I should have a "Charge indicator" light which I think is the "amp"light on yours. it has a wire coming from the regulator post on the factory alternator. the wire comes inside as a gray wire with a plastic housing, it goes in that hole and then goes over to the dash voltage regulator post on the fuel guage.

is this where that switch would go?? why would they have 2 of them since there is only one light? makes me wonder if somewhere they needed it to show front and rear separatly for like a twin stick setup.

Sorry I don't have a digi but mine looks the same as the one posted above. Don't know about the plugs above the shift rods I've never had the T/C out of mine to see and with the glass body on mine the opening for the shift levers was onle cut to just fit them so I dont have a plate to remove to look.

I can't tell you which rod is which from this picture. One rod controls low range, the other controls 4WD. If you move the shifter and watch the rods it should be clear. Take the plugs out and look at where the detents are positioned in each of the shifter positions. A backup light switch will have a ball on the end of it. When the ball is pushed in (no detent), the switch is on (or off), when the ball is released, the switch is off (on). The combination of the switch, detents, and shifter position will then indicate something. Shouldn't be hard to figure out.

Timgr is absolutely correct. International used threaded plugs in their 20's when they didn't use a switch. Jeep just used the push-in plugs that don't seal very well. IIRC the right side shift rail is the one with the relief cut in the rail, but like Tim said, pull the plugs and shift through all the ranges and take a look. Nickmil.

Did you ever have a chance to take the pic of your reverse light switch? I am in the middle of a rewire and cannot find the switch.

    Sure did, sorry the post got lost in me doing other things lol;

here is the backside pic of the tranny looking forward, the reverse switch is the one on the right(mines broken), the left switch is the transmission control switch I think.

Thanks.... I found it, it was under the Skid Plate..... I tried to look around the plate, but I will have to take it off completely to wire this.
