IMHO a quick trip to the FLAPS that has a hydraulic press is well worth it to change axle shaft bearings. If you don't have a FLAPS with a press in the back room, try an automatic transmission place. Most will charge you a few bucks each to press them on/off, if they charge at all. I like to use the small mom & pop places..

Had a Question on the rear hubs. I shimmed out the shafts/bearings, got the outter seals and backing plate in: I slide the hub onto the shaft, and (1) how do I know if the outter seal is sealing around the hub? and(2) the hub sits about a centimeter over some of the shaft threads is that ok? I tried tightening that castle nut to where the cotter pin goes through. The parts with the gap always seem to end up off of the hole for the cotter pin. I just feel that the hub isnt sitting right in the outter seal...:?

I don't know if this will be any help but, I had the same thoughts as you and just decided to go for it. IIRC, the Mil book said crank to 150# ... like I have a wrench that will tell me that. So, I leaned on an 18" breaker till it was TIGHT ... viola, the cotter hole lined up with the castle nut. I just figured I was blessed and never looked back.

Thanks Homebrew, I think the seal is sealing against the hub, cause when I pumped it with grease, it came out of the vent hole and not through the seal. So Im assuming Im ok there. Ill try tightening it with a breaker bar and slip the pin through. I dont think itll strip it. :beer:Thanks for your help!
