I just picked up a new volt reg for my 66 cj, it is for the prestolite gen that is in the jeep. problem is that the new reg has an extra terminal marked "IGN" I know that this is an ignition terminal but the old reg did not have one , what should i do? leave the terminal empty or wire a hot off the ignition sw to the reg?

    Re: prestolite gen wireing

Take it back and get a GM 10SI alternator and sell the prestolite to someone doing a full blown resto.:D:v6:

if you look close at the reg it has 3 wire posts the arm,fld and bat the ground is just attached to the case . mine has all those terminals + 1 an igniton post thats the one that is not on the diagram but is on my reg , thats where my issue is. the dash amp gauge wire attaches to the arm post on mine.

Generators are low output devices and the wrong regulator can damage it. Prestolite gen needs prestolite reg. What is the numbers on your gen? For the stock 66 Jeep prestolite generator you should be using a three terminal VBO-4201E-4a regulator.

the reg I bought was for a prestolite gen part " r312" also had a number of 3052729 it is a BWD part

can you decifer if I have the right part? and if not where can im get the right reg?

well after diggin the old reg out of the trash you are dead on with that part #
also after some reaserch i do have a prestolit gen. all the parts places list the reg i have as the replacement , even though it does not work. i found a napa vr-206 reg that was mentionedc on a difffrent site as being a better replacement for the prestolite gen so I might give that one a try.

You have the correct generator for your jeep but the BWD number 3052729 same as MPN R312 shows a 3 terminal regulator vice 4 that you have. Maybe boxed wrong? Does the regulator itself have any numbers on it? I cannot find any technical data on that BWD regulator so I will not tell you to try to use it.

Glad you found your old regulator. Open that baby up and take a looksee. If it not full of rust or burned or melted parts, you can probably put it back into service. Burnish the contacts real good and try it again. Make sure you have a good ground wire from the regulator base to the generator.

Well I got it to charge! for the prestolite gen you will need BWD/standard voltage regulator part # R-185.
this is not the parts store listed replacment # but it is the direct replacment for the prestolite reg part # vb0 4201-e and also a few others .the other cross over #'s are in the print books only .
so if anyone else needs this info here ya go.:D
