Hey John , That's pretty neat on the BB's.........never seen them use BB's...........On the big trucks for years the guys were using a powered like bag of material that they would pour into the tire just before putting the second bead on. Did a good job although we would only do the Steer axle tires and never the drivers...........although if you got a flat it would Pee off the poor guy who had to deal with the repair and the mess from balancing material inside...........Good Tip Thanks!

I've now had a chance to run the Jeep up to 50 mph with the balance beads in the tires. I can honestly say it's smoother than any balance job I've had done on the old Krawlers. They aren't easy tires to get to balance anyway, but I have no wobble, bounce, vibration or anything else with them now. You might even say they are silky smooth. ;)

Hey Posi, I'm glad to hear that your balance beads are working well to smooth out those big meats. I was wondering have you only gotten your Jeep up to 50mph based on any limitation, or just for lack of oportunity? Your Jeep is one of the primary inspirations for my build, but one of my requirements is the ability to travel at 65mph comfortably.

Also, did you buy your frame horns from somewhere, cut them off a donor, or custom make them?

I could probably do 60 mph no problem, 65 if I had to. Up here where I live the speed limit is pretty much 50 unless you get on the Interstate. It would definitely be better at higher speeds with sway bars. I don't have to drive it on the freeway often so I didn't bother with sway bars. If I go long distance I tow it. I cut the frame horns off of a donor frame that had been t-boned.

Hey SKT, there are a few things I've done since the photo shoot for JP. I picked up a set of beadlocks from Craig's List and added hydro assist steering from Redneck Ram. I also went to a Teralow Super 18 t-case for a 3.15 low range and put the Saturn OD back in. I have posted some video from last summer in the TRrails section of the Forum. Other than that the Jeep is about the same as when JP did the shoot. I'm going to Moab in March for EJS so I hope to have some new pics after that.

We'll be in Moab for the safari as well. If I see your rig I'll say hi.
image.jpeg You can't miss me, I'll be in the Jeep with the smallest tires in town.

Awesome. I'd love to meet up with some people from the Forum while I'm there. I'll look for you. We arrive on Tues. the 22nd and we are doing runs with the Red Rock 4 Wheelers on Wed, Fri. and Sat. I'm looking for something to do on Thurs. We may just be on our own.

How did the 50th EJS go? Trail report, with pics?

Love this build, had to reread the whole thread again.

    PS
BBs are probably the easiest way to balance big tires. My tire guy has been pushing them for several years. He uses them in log trucks, school buses, and over the road trucks with great success. Just make sure to either run the red valve stem caps or let anybody who works on them know your running BBs.

The other way to balance them is to do it hot. Run down the HWY for 20 miles or so and then have them balanced before they can cool. I've done several sets of swamps this way and they will run smooth once warmed back up.
