Well it was in one piece when I brought it home. Fixed some engine issues v6 231 wrong intake and valve cover gaskets and timing issues from the PO. Rebuilt the 2g and got her purring.but as I dug deeper I found a pour quality of work and the usual problems with a jeep of this age. So totally striped it to pieces. Tub is on the rotisserie and I am recoring the floors. Tranny and t case will be rebuilt front and rear diffs will be inspected and resealed. However the frame is hooped and bent. To many repairs from ? So am about to build a new 2x4 tube frame

Pookie-san, there's nothing wrong with posting regarding the CJ as you show it above. However, the Intermediate forum is intended for '72 or later Jeeps, which is contrary to the frame you show above. Just trying to make sense of what you've posted. We like all these Jeeps, regardless of the year of manufacture.

The jeep is titled as a 1973 that's why I questioned the frame did not seem like a frame for that year. Thanks I can easily move to the earlier forum

Your frame should have the serial number stamped on the top side of the main rail right above the rear axle on the passenger side. When original, it matches the VIN plate. Doubtful that's the case here, but it can help you date the frame at least. Of course, it may not matter if you are building a new one.

Yep, that's a '76 or newer dash and column. That column location won't work with a pre-72 because the factory seating position does not line up with the column. Front clip is '71 or earlier. Windshield is '73-ish, could be 69-70 at the earliest. Looks like the tub is '74 or earlier. It's a mash-up.

Jeep bodies rust out much faster than the frames, so there should be a surplus of frames out there. ... just in case you'd rather replace than fabricate a frame. I would look for a M38A1 frame.

Also, looking at your frame a bit - it has a Saginaw steering conversion, so that fits with the '76 column location. It's been boxed some. The hole in the cross member is likely where the steering shaft went through to reach the steering gear. Doesn't look so terrible to me ...

Tub is fiberglass. Frame is so flaked no # is visible but that's ok just want to have the right original frame dimms for new construction I am not a fan of used frames. By the time I would get to my comfort level a new build would be cheaper and so much nicer to work with.

Any help in identifying this running gear? The front is casted with a 27a.but I am unsure what the rear is?

The 27a casting indicates a Dana 27 axle. I am not sure there is a way to date the axle from the housing, but if the ring gear is original, it will have a manufacture date stamped on it.

Re the rear axle, it's probably a tapered Dana 44, ie axle with a tapered end, key way and nut. These axles are offset to match the transfer case output. A '73 has a one-piece centered flanged 44, where the wheel flange (hub) is part of the axle shaft.

So this 44 should be a later model. Here is the axle picture
