After a search of existing threads, I got alot of good ideas for how to attack removing the pitman arm on my '64 CJ5. I needed to replace the seal because it was leaking. One thing I did notice, I tried to use a standard pitman arm puller, but it was actually a little bit too big, and when I would crank down on the puller, there wasn't much of the puller gripping the arm, and puller would bend out just a little bit and slide off. I got a tie rod/pitman arm puller which had a smaller opening and by alternately tightening down on the puller, and tapping at the pitman arm with a brass hammer, I was able to persuade it off.

    Thanks for the collective advice!

Unless you have swapped a saginaw setup in your jeep there isn't a pitman arm to pull on a 64 model. Are you talking about the bellcrank thats up under the front crossmember? A picture would help.

Ross steering boxes have a pitman arm on the side.

I might have my terminology wrong. It's the arm on the Ross steering box:

Steering arm or steering gear arm.
Manual says use a C-3646 puller and cautions against using a hammer or wedge because of the possibility of shaft damage. Sorry - I don't have pics of puller.

My Ross box had small leaks also, so I drained it and put grease in it (packed it full) and no more leaks. It doesn't get too cold here in So.Ga. so it works very well.
