I finally feel like I should make a build thread because I'm getting close to getting my jeep street legal. :)

I got my jeep from my old boss which one of his employees rolled it doing doughnuts. Which lead to my girlfriend calling it rover. In addition to being rolled it had no brakes, working lights, bad clutch the works.
This was about three years ago maybe four.

Pictures are just close ups of some of the repairs that I needed to do.
I will try and get original picture the day I got it, was a interesting drive for my dad driving it down the hill with no brakes.

I proceeded to work on the wiring, redoing the front brakes and locking hubs along with the master cylinder

then I took the whole thing apart to fix the cracked frame while taking 3 semesters of welding so I could fix it :)

The crack was basically the whole frame rail except the top.
I will definitely keep the photo journal going.
Here's the body off so I can fix crack and my floorboard at my welding class.

Floor pan under gas tank which is shot luckily only rust problem

Looking back at these pictures I can cut really straight.. Now if I can weld sheet metal as good as I can cut

This is after welding crack and wire wheeling the whole frame and painting
    [IMG]

The bent bumper is on my to do list to bend straight and move closer

Closer on fixing dents long way to go but back together enough to move it back home

Repairing my hood was by far the hardest part so far...
Trying to get dents out when po used a punch to close the hood is bad...

Took a while but got all the spot welds drilled (ironically 3 months later I bought a spot weld cutter and don't know what to use it on)
    Almost there :)

I got the wiring all finished up and jeep running but not very well but at-least got a spot on the driveway
[IMG] last bit of body work was done and ready to weld bracing back together.

Which turned out to be more of a pain then I thought and I ended up putting in three small dents in the process. :( don't have a current picture. I will take one tomorrow while I make a metal glove box.

After I got my hood back together I saw a post about a pullout bearing and pulled my trans and transfer case just to check. I'm glad I did because the bearing was catching on the shaft and it drove so much better. My price to pay was a torn ligament in my upper arm from pushing up the trans while on the jack.

Almost caught up to present. More pictures to go

A while ago I did some patch panels
    [IMG]

So does any one else use coins, electrical tape for welding?

Sorry these ones are blurry I didn't want to go back in the house for camera (too into my work and cat might chase me out the house

It's the worst in this spot it looks real bad on this picture

I finally got time to add some more stuff. (highspeed internet and a computer helps instead of a phone)
Welded the hood back together and it looks like allot of bondo but it all gets sanded off anyway
    [IMG]

sanded off got it up to 180 grit but had some spots to touch up
    [IMG]

    close
    [IMG]
this is were I started white sanding.... Craigslist has its way of mocking you for only for like 65$ you can have the hood that wasn't to a rolled vehicle

sanded at 320 grit but I had one or two spots that need glazing putty

bondo on quart and rocker which the passenger side is the only thing that I have to sand

I don't think I like this but yeah there was allot of pinholes in the bondo after I sanded i'm not using the correct primer to fill them in....

    primered
    [IMG]

I had to see what it looked like with the windshield frame and I love it

So does anyone else use 2x4's for block sanding? specially the smooth ones :)
also this paint job will be ACE Yellow and will be sprayed on and currently the jeep sits covered up due to the rain
but fenders, hoods and brackets are all pull off

I was able to go over to the house were my jeep is and fixed my radiator because the little pinto radiator was rubbing against the cross member and I fixed that
and welded up the cracks after breaking my drill bit four times it kept getting smaller and its ready for sanding

there is something nice about dressing welds with a hand file anyone feel the same
sorry I don't have pictures of me fixing my grill at this moment (hands were to cold to pull out phone)

I must say when I took the jeep out and got out it was nice not having to hold the roll bars to keep it running away

Anyone ever consider building there own glove box, I went to a metal supplier and they had one of those grab all you can for 68 cents a pound and got enough metal for a glove box and a twin stick conversion

I haven't got a chance to drill the holes and put a back on it. I will do when I pull off the dash to paint it :)

Edit: My bends are not straight I don't have a sheetmetal brake so a autobody hammer and a vice had to do

Clamp it to the metal table with an angle iron and use the body hammer on it. That's what I have been doing for years till a friend gave me a brake for helping clean out their storage unit for them.

sanded down grill and straightened some of the slates and couple welds here and there
    [IMG]

I didn't get the shots of primering everything like dash, grill, fenders ext sorry and not that excited now

this is excited the first coat of paint :)

my sprayer wasn't working right that's why my grill is all striped. You don't see it now :) and it was really windy Friday or Saturday.

I had my dad help me with painting today while I finished my dash, tailgate, grill but here he is painting the dash :)

Body parts put away after three coats I will wetsand at 600 tomorrow I love holidays :) and then put on two more coats
    [IMG]

after thinking and thinking i'm going to do the firewall with bed liner on both sides hence why its not all nice and primered.

I can't wait to get the jeep painted i'm tired of walking across town I think I got another month (money) I need mirrors and glass...
While i'm waiting I will twin stick my transfer case, install my speedo cable, review mirror and put the body together and polish my chrome pieces on the buffer, and put on the bedliner and find some seat covers.

I shall take some pictures for the rest of the stuff I did, I polished and polished chrome and still more to polish.
I bed lined interior, tool box, under hood ( looks amazing) firewall, installed the trans cover (tapped and new bolts),
Installed homemade glove box, Installed stereo just need speakers, scored some doors I just need upper hinges...

Broke down and bought a 100 bolts, washers and locking nuts and installed the roll bars.
oh and I got to get another speedo cable... second time is the charm :) (binded and broke before I got two feet)

Snuck it out on the road to test rattles, caught one and promptly fixed it, just need to address the steering it wanders. I believe its the bell crank I will jack up the front and find out.

I will give you guys a good video of test and more photos Thursday I think

I just got a bunch of little odds and ends to take care of before it goes on the road legally i'm hoping that May will be the magic month :)
    windshield glass,
mirrors, Might hit wrecking yards for this :), $50 is a little much right now for two chrome mirrors
    steering,
    speedo cable,
    touch up,
    heater,
    seat covers

Nope, Ace Paint. Although I'm sure they are both the same :) I like it though, it makes things easier.
I would freak out if I scratched paint that I paid more than a hundred for.

I'm excited I get glass for the windshield next week

    TexesBlues
I do gardening... its not that girly... lol yeah I know stuff happens.
The paint is ACE brand and its $30 you get it at hardware stores. Get a harbor freight cup gun and thin down the paint just a little with paint thinner and filter it. I took the filter out of the cup gun since I filtered it already. Not sure how it touches up but it sprays nice.

I've enjoyed reading your about your build, Piff! It reminds of my younger days, working on my jeep in welding class! It looks like the frame fork on the front sticks out a little more than stock- are you going to put a winch on it? What is the little round thingy by the front bumper?

The paint color is excellent, glad you are keeping the windshield black, I think it is mistake when people paint their early cj's windshield frames the same as the body because then it looks like a late model AMC jeep.

Keep up the great work, you're almost there!

TexasBlue I know what you mean i'm giving you a hard time :) spraying is easy. I did that for about 6 years trick is not to do cabinets and separate the body parts and its easier not to get runs. Some of the members rolled on rustoleom and it turned out really nice never seen it in person though. I will check compressor when I get a chance and let you know how many gallons I was running.

Homerdog: thank you, without my 3 welding class' I would have butchered the poor thing...

What do you mean by the frame fork? what ever it is would surprise me the previous owner rolled the poor thing.

Yeah it took me a while to learn about the windshield thing. It would of been easier to get bottom mounted wipers too and paint them body color but I like the styling the older jeeps better then the slightly new jeeps.
don't remind me I'm almost there I'm thinking on the road for sure in May :)
