I would think the philps bolts holding the hinge on were clear zinc plated.
I didn't notice the rear wheelwell untill picture was sent to Adobe!

I think that I have posted this pic before, but the original screws are mighty unique, with grabber-ridges built in.

Oakey-Doakey, I was just talkin to CeeJay & he sez that Grumpy, who is arguably the oldest original condition CJ5 here (if you don't count the one link too-short tailgate chains or the Superfluous Second Ignition Wire  ) has black hinges & frame

But I still like a body coloured frame better

Mine is 42457 and here is a photo of the original paint on the windshield. Sorry about the gas tank in the picture.

Is it possible that the black hinges and ws frame were part of a trim package or that solid color jeep was an agri jeep or something like that? i only bring this up because I have seen so many old pics and illustrations showing both. I'm just asking. Not trying to ruffle any feathers.

BTW: this is a great thread.

I'd be reluctant to consider any photos/illustrations that were released for marketing purposes as solid evidence for issues like this.

IMHO the photographers and illustrators took some liberties in order to show the Jeep better - a black w/s frame just isn't going to "pop" off a background like a color one would.

Well, I wonder if anyone has any assembly line photos from Toledo or Canada - or the next best thing - a picture of an old JEEP dealership with a CJ sitting out front? I'm guessing there may have been several subtle differences between the foreign-made JEEPs, and the U.S. ones.

I agree with what's being said about ads and such - probably they did some special painting for some of the show models. Anyway, this pic is from the FSM; even though it shows black hinges, that could still be suspect, as it does make them show up better for the black and white rendering.

Odd, but it also looks like the windshield frame is black on the outside (including the lower hinges) but body colored on the inside. Go figure.

Just to add....My '57 was painted white by PO, but under that was original paint, black hinges (upper and lower) and windshield frame. As far as the screws, yup, they're one-of-a-kind. 1/4"x28 w/Philips head and serrated taper. Won't find that easily. Heck, just finding a 1/4"x28 with the correct head (sans philips and serrations) is a challenge. FWIW, there's a place in Glendale, Az called "Marks nuts and bolt" that MAY have a 1/4"x28 with philips. (just not the serrations.) At least they had them back in July when I was there. Don't know if they ship or not, but if you need them, it may be worth a try.

Black hinges, windshields, trans covers etc....I suspect were that way for ease of production cetain colors were that way so that they could be assembled without any variance from the assembly line. That is if parts were all painted certain colors bodies and frames could be assembled to close to a finished product without a visit to the paint booth. You know, they look kinda neat that way. 'Specially since you know the factory did it that way.

Howard oh Howard. What a jerk. :) As we speak, the illusive second wire is even more illusive .... almost ghost like .... and the tailgate chin grew a link. I have been feeding Grumpy beef jerky .... lots of iron! Maybe you should have mentioned the exhaust bolt i replaced! LOL

also note in that picture the JEEP name stamped in the side panel is of later type with lower case letters. I found this of interest. My .02 is black for hinges and winshield frame though I did my hinges to match the body color ( green) on my 71 and the frame black. This is all my opinion and note based on any actual knowledge of fact.

I still remember significant parts of the 60's and 70's, and my recollection is that the CJ-5's had black windshields. Under the second coat of paint on mine ('68 ), the windshield is black inside and out.

I checked out my early 70: it appears that the hinges and windshield frame were white. The color and trim were the aqua green color (forget the real name) and charcoal. The white appears to be if not factory, at least as old as the JEEP. Maybe dealers would change accents to better market the little guys?

I sure hope someone out there has them... When I took mine off last fall, I found some PO had completely blown out most of the screw heads (probably with a screwdriver that was too small). I had to MIG weld bolts onto the heads to remove them  . It got them out, but now I defnietly need new ones

After tearing my JEEP apart this winter, I am 100% certain that I had original paint. Chassis black windshield, upper and lower hinges. (1970)

I'm not sure how the purists will take it and I'm sure they are well known otherwise-- Totally Stainless has them (without serrations)- looks like pg. 98 in the catalog.

ps-- this is great topic-- thanks!
