I think it is fairly well known that windshield frames on the early CJ-5s were painted black at the factory. What I'm wondering is whether the lower half of the windshild hinges were also painted black originally. Mine are the kind designed to separate at the joint - 1962 vintage.

I've seen it both ways, and tried several searches first without feeling too certain I have found the answer. Does anyone have information on this? I made the mistake of painting my windshield frame body color , and want to paint it black at some point; I'm wondering if I should leave the lower hinges alone, or paint them black too.

x2. I think it's a "chassis black", or 60% semi-gloss. Some PO painted my lower hinges boody color too, but all photos of stockers I've seen showed black hinges.

I'm gonna buck the trend here-

Early factory photos & drawings show windshield frames & hinges as being body coloured.

IMHO the body coloured frames look (ducking) better

My $0.02...marketing materials didn't always show what was delivered - I can recall an ad showing a Tuxedo Park CJ6 with the steps colored red. I'm sure they made changes like that to help different things appear more prominent in the photos (imagine trying to see the w/s hardware in that shot from the FSM if the w/s were black).

So for me it's w/s in black, and lower hinges in body color.

When I first acquired my '62 CJ-5 the hinges, W/S frame, and hood hinges were black; so was the grille (rest of the body was another color). I'm pretty sure all of the black paint was fairly recent - so it doesn't tell me much about the original.

I'm trying to be faithful to the original whenever I can, regardless of my personal preferences. I appreciate everyone's input so far! That pic above looks like a factory assembly line photo showing black lower hinges! That's probably as good as I could hope for in terms of evidence; THANKS.

It would be even better if that were a picture of a US-produced Jeep. Check out the rear wheelwells and the caption.

However after checking the various coffee table Jeep books I have within reach I'll admit - I was wrong. They all show black w/s and black lower w/s hinges.

Pic of mine about 3 weeks after I bought it new in 1971. Don't know about other years for sure, but in 71 they were all black :)

Didn't the Tux Parks have chrome hinges?

This will probably not be fair, but my Tux came with (original) body color of white, windshield frame color was black, but with chromed hinges. (Part of the Tux package.)

(OOPS! thread took forever to load up on my computer, didn't see chime-in for Tux Park chromed hinges.) (((*dial up sucks*)))

What's different about the wheelwell other than the additional panel toward the rear?

It's not curved -- it has the flat top that marks it as a Jeep produced outside the US.

I also noticed that the bolts holding the hinge to the body in that factory picture aren't black, even though the hinge is. Would those have been painted black later, or were they coated or made of something to prevent rust, etc?

Mine are rusting just fine inside the hinge, thank you.R) I like the extra bit of bling they have without paint (or rust); now if I can just find some stainless fasteners of the right type....
