This is my first Jeep. As it says in my signature, it was "rode hard and put away wet", which includes a veritable cornucopia of failed repairs. Upon disassembly of my front hubs, I found spindle nuts that had been ground round (installed with a chisel), a ring with holes and a flat washer that I would normally expect to find in front of an outer wheel bearing.

Attempting to repair to good order I purchased a new wheel nut and lockwasher kit which is not like my original but I'll bet it works fine. There is a larger flat washer with a tang that goes in to the groove and also has a foot that would go underneath the spindle nut. I'm guessing this nut goes between the inner and outer spindle nuts to lock it. The question, is does the tang/foot go under the inner or outer spindle nut?

    Thanks.

There are two nuts and two washers. (From memory, so maybe not exact) - first goes the thicker smaller diameter washer with a tab. Then a nut. Cinch down to proper pre-load. Then goes the thinner washer and outer nut. Tighten to secure. Bend the edge of the outer washer out over the nut face to lock. I think it does not matter if the tab on the washer points in or out, as long as it's in the groove so that the washer can't rotate.

You can buy a kit with new parts - Spindle Nut and Washer Kit 2 Nuts, Crimp Washer & Lock Washer ALL 4WD Jeep PN A867K, Crown CROA867K. This is a Crown part, so it's available widely.

I'd get a spindle nut wrench Spindle Nut Wrench and replace the grease seal if I pulled the hub. SOP.

It sounds like you may have lock-a-matic hubs that used a round ring nut with set sews in it that locked on the flat washers with holes. Do a search and you should come up with more info.

Ah yes, that's possible. But use of a chisel suggests a hex nut.

If you have LockOMatics, probe in the holes and three of them wll have allen set screws under the grease. Remove the screws and the lock nut comes off with your fingers.

I wouldn't necessarily bet on that.:D As Twin2's photo seems to confirm nothing is safe from chisel wielding POs.
