It’s more critical on the really low-geared jeeps. If you drag a Jeep with 5.38 gears down the freeway at 70 mph, the drivetrain is spinning at about 150% of what it was ever designed to. It’s just unnecessary wear and tear, when unhooking the driveshaft is easy in comparison to a premature rebuild.

Why does the parking brake drum have these holes?

It's probably not for heat, since the parking brake is only engaged when the jeep is stopped. I thought it might be for some manufacturing technique, but the regular brake drums don't have those holes and they were manufactured around the same time. What's the purpose of the holes and why such an odd shape?

IIRC the holes give access to the adjuster for the brake shoes. Rather than thru the backing plate like regular brakes are adjusted. mike

I tow my Jeep on a tow dolly, and pull the rear drive shaft, and hold it up with a ratchet strap between the frame rails, tape the caps on with duct tape. I have never had any problem at all. If you had put your front hubs in Free, I don't think you would have had all those problems, Sorry you had such a bad experience. Good Luck

oh yeah well , I flat towed my jeep, it got caught in a rut on the side of the hwy , I turned the truck slightly to pop the jeep onto the road ,,,,,,and that's when the fun and poop started ,the jeep decided to pop onto the road and continue to go another direction than the truck , it jack knifed and I counter steered ,,,, into a 2 car 8 wheel slide on a 2 lane road ,,,, ended up in the opposite lane and the jeep slid in right behind the truck ,,,,and at the very last amount of sliding the little guy passed out and fell over ! a buddy had been following me saw the whole thing,,,,,,, within5 minutes we winched it back on it's wheels all before the CHP showed up ….. and it fired right up and I drove it home and my buddys passenger drove my truck,,,,,,, the towbar looked like a pretzel. I now bought a Brake Buddy and it works AWESOME...… this concludes steve's story time ,,,,good day

Glad no one got hurt hope the Jeep isn’t too messed up, all these horror stories make me wanna buy a car trailer. Kinda worried about flat towing the Jeep over to the house like I had planned.

Went out and done that very thing today.Been without a trailer for a few years and finally dropped the hammer on this 18' . Will be nice not to be flat towing any of them. Already have a bed winch and tool box to install. DSC03530.JPG

Could have slid the driveshaft slip joint apart and replaced the joint without pulling the other end... hindsight being 20/20 and all.

For those that flat tow, do you have a contingency plan for getting home when you break something that won't allow you to flat tow home? Went wheeling last weekend and a guy in our group flat tows his 3b broke the front spring hanger off of the frame for the drivers rear spring. Can see how far back in the wheel well the drivers rear tire is. Not safe to flat tow home as the axle would move back and forth the length of the shackle when you would hit a bump/axle was crooked and would not tow straight. Luckily, I have a 14K 22' trailer and it would fit on with my '6.

If it happened a great distance from home, trip to u-haul for a trailer.
Trailers are pretty cheap it you have to tow something to California.

I've seen 2 fellow Jeepers with broken rear axle r-p remove the ring gear from the case and then tow home.

Heck, I DROVE mine home when that happened  then wedged a 4x4 piece of lumber in the frame, ratchet strapped everything in place and towed it 15 miles to Warloch's house so he could weld it back together!
