While replacing my water pump, I had to replace the timing cover. I have a 225 v6, but I think the replacement timing cover is from a 231 (oil pump threads are metric, and the timing indicater is bolted on). I got everything put together but while testing the engine I noticed that the oil pressure was high, way too high. I'm seeing 40-50 lbs at idle, 60 lbs at 1000 rpm, 70-75 lbs at 2000 rpm. Its high enough that it's weeping from the pump, not matter how hard I tighten the screws, also tried a new gasket. I checked out the oil relief spring/piston, everything looked good. I even tried the spring from the old timing cover, pressure is still too high. Any ideas?

Is the relief port in the cover clear? Gasket covering the relief port?

I'm not sure which is the relief port, is that the one next to the oil filter spin-on threads?

I talked to cj5/442, I think I have a high pressure pump, and I wasn't used to the high temps with cold oil. Now I'm seeing 60 psi at 2000 rpm once warmed up. I also cinched up on the oil pump bolts and it's looking much better.

My 231 sports a high volume pump. I usually have 40 psi at idle and 55-60 at speed.

High Pressure Pumps and High Volume Pumps are two different things.
