Okay... here it is... the Greenie has it Motor out yesterday and to stay the least it's shot... piston decided to break apart and send metal chunks all over the inside... well the only good thing is that the cylinder walls are fine, so at least we can have the block/ heads machined...
also the D300 input gear is almost gone and the idle gear i believe is missing teeth oh yeah i have another d300...
    here is what i'm thinking,

    Machine the heads and block
Rebuild Kit for the AMC 360
    Upgrade to a RV Cam

    or

i have access to a 350/350 in good running order
it would cost less to put the 350/350 in it
cause all i need to get is the adapters from Novak...

now we were discussing this am and one thing brought up was the wieght distrubution... would u rather have more wieght up front or less on the rocks? me still learning the rock stuff...

any comment will work, as i need to make a decision pretty quickly

    thanks again

Frank, if weight is a factor in choosing between a 360 and 350. The late 360 weighs in at 540 while the earlier 360 come in at 600. The 60s – 70s chevy 350 small block go 575, the Buick 350 weighs in at 450. I hope this helps, as for me I would rebuild the 360.

Cat and I stopped bye the Shop and i'm awaiting the finall tally for the rebuild... just don't want it to byte me later... Cat is leaning towards the 360 rebuild... this is an orignal 1969 AMC 360 motor... never been rebuilt or anything... probably one of the first ones off the line in 69... i'm actually impressed that it would stil start... we'll see when the mech calls... on the weight thing... not to sure, is it better to have a heavy front verses a lighter front when rock climbing? member i'm a flat lander down here in FL

    thanks so far folks

I dont think you will be happy with a 304. it is a nice motor, but there is a reason why so many people swap out the 304 for a 360 ;) And since you have the axle beef already you can run the 360 with nnnnooooooo problem :)

With rock crawling it’s all about balance, you don’t want one end heavily outweighing the other. Some rock crawlers even add water to their tires for weight and balance.

I have the 304 in mine and although it is a good motor (~20k on rebuild), when it wears out I'll put a 360 or maybe even a 401 in. Just my .02.

I can't speak to the merits of the 304 vs 360, but at between $450 and $475 that Novak adapter is going to be a big bite out of the budget.
