Bubba referred me to this site and after browsing it for a few minutes I am very impressed with the knowledge available. I hope someone can help me with a challenge relating to a decal I have been unable to find.

I have a 1966 CJ5 originally issued to the USDA. On the dash was a 3"X5" warranty decal covering the terms and conditions between Kaiser (the contractor) and the US Government. Mine was fine until the guy doing the restoration wiped it with a rag with paint thinnner. I have searched for a replacement decal with no luck so far.

Any leads on where I might locate one or someone who could create a replica would be appreciated. I have a clear photo of the original decal but the jpeg file is too large to attach here.

I'll be happy to look at reproducing it too if you want to email me the pic.

What are the dimensions on that? How about thickness of the black border?

Seems like with a few dimensions it would be pretty straightforward (aside from reading and re-typing all that text.... yikes!!!!)

    Hello Brian,
The decal sticker is 3"X5" and the black border is 1/8". I'd really like to find if anyone knows where to get OEM decal but I think I've nearly exausted that effort.

I don't have any experience making these decals so while it may seem simple to some, it seems a real challenge to me (what kind of decal stock do you need, where do you get it, ink type etc?) Appreciate any advice anyone has to offer.

    Thanks,
    Eddy

Well if Billy or Tigershark can't make it for ya (which I bet they could) there is one more idea for ya.... hang on, I'm gonna look into it a bit before I suffer from OMIF syndrome (open mouth insert foot, FYI).

If I can clean up the image (or make a new one just like it) you can get a 3x5 sticker from Cafe Press. Send 'em the picture, sticker's just the right size, and if anyone else wants them (must be rare - but maybe) they can get them, too! Or if yours ever gets messed up and you want to get a new one, viola! :D

Ps - just went back and looked at the pic - are you sure it's 3x5? Height vs Width doesn't seem like the right ratio... looks more like it's 4x5 or some such. Maybe it's just me.

I'll measure the original tonight and re-confirm. Could be the camera distorted the shape as I had to be fairly close to it to get the text so I could read it.

    Thanks a bunch!

Thanks so much for the leads, I just sent a message to Cafepress and hopefully I'll hear from them shortly.
I'll measure and reconfirm the dimensions tonight I think its 3x5 and the angle of the camera probably makes the picture look different.
thanks for all the feedback and help.

I run our club's cafe press site, so if the size is right, it will be a piece of cake. Give me a day or two and I'll see what I can do.

Here it is, but I could not get it exact. I had to use a bold font for it to show up properly, but by doing that, I couldn't use bold where it needed to be, other than that, it's pretty close. I'll let you guys proof read it ;)

This is based on a size of 3" x 5". Once it's proof read, and the size is verified, I'll add it to cafe press.

What are you using to make that, Tigershark?

Lemme get home, may be able to "boldify" those extra words for you.

Wow!! Man am I impressed - no astonished is a better description.
Jim that is really great looking!

Brian was right, its not 3" , its 3.75" X 5" to the outside edges of the black border which is 1/8".

One line is missing (it's the 7th line from the bottom) "contractor to the port of embarkation in the United States designated by the".
And we need to add spacing between words on the 4th line from bottom.

Jim, Thanks so much for this. The font looks exactly like the original - with so many choices, how did you select the font?

I was going to suggest talking with gdb:
    http://www.bearcreeksurvey.com/ForumOnly.htm

He makes repro decals, I've not seen one, other folks here have, but I was under the impression that it was a water applied decal, get it wet, slide it around and then let it dry in place?

That would probably give better results than the cafepress? It would look more original, no?

You've got a good image to go on now it looks like.

I was afraid of that. It creates a problem - Cafe Press is in the business of printing things on their stock. I.E. you want a t-shirt made, they got blank t-shirts and the equipment to do it. Sames goes for mousepads, mugs, etc etc etc. Stickers, too. BUT. You can't just get any ol' sticker made up, you get your picture printed on the stock they have... which in this case is 3"x5"...

That being said, talk to your local photo shop. I know a lot of places - including developers in stores like Meijer and Wal*Mart - like to print pictures on things as well. They might be able to help you out, being a little more versatile than Cafe Press.

Water applied?? Like for plastic models? :D

Honestly, though, I'm not so sure. I would think the original in that sort of application really was just a sticker.
