Machine does it. They don't do it by hand like the article. ;)

They just mount it up and turn it on. Machine has knives that cut the sipes in the tires.

If you wonder why major manufactures don't do it, basically it's time. It takes time to cut each tire after it's made from what I gather.

I wouldn't bother with siping usless you are going to be on wet roads a lot, or have trouble with slipping on the stock tread. I think it kind of detracts from the "retro" look of NDT's.

As far as snow is concerned, we get a little here every other year or so (most we ever got was about 3 feet, maybe 20 years ago). The NDT's did just fine on unplowed snow. Wouldn't want to try them on ice without chains.

Re: Model T hotrod - I'm no great fan of Boyd either, but as far as the injustice of hacking up a Model T goes, you have to remember that the Model T was just the Pinto of its day. There were millions of them made, so parts and complete vehicles are neither rare nor particularly expensive, even now days. Now if he was to chop up a real early brass T-1-T truck, that would be a shame, but it still wouldn't deprive a museum of a rare original.

I had 700x16 NDTs on my '56 Cj5 for around a year then sold them for some 31s because I used my jeep for the deer lease trails and trail rides, climbing. I loved the NDTs but I had very little road miles (trailer queen). Go for the NDTs you'll like 'em for what your driving will be. You asked for opinions and got them. :hurrican: :flag:

You think that they detract from the looks? You can barely see 'em unless you go up to the tire and pull them apart from what I've seen.

They have other benefits on other than just wet roads or snow. The tire runs cooler and lasts longer and sticks to dry roads better too.

Many thanks to all for the input!!! I truly appreciate it! When the time comes, I'm sure I'll be posting here to see if anybody in the Denver area has any to sell.

I still think Boyd Coddington is a fool for hacking up that T, it doesn't matter how many there are left. Butchering something like that is just wrong. He could have built the same thing from aftermarket parts.

There seems to be a lot of members here with 1956 CJ5's? Sweet!

The previous photo shows the square shoulder type, on the early '5 on the rocks, it has the round shoulder type ( I think these only come in 600x16 NDTs).

We lived in California for a year & I realize that in your part of the world old cars, even as old as a T, arn't particularly rare. I saw I don't no how many restorable ones sitting around in junk yards.

We bought our '62 Beetle "Putt" in LA & drove him all the way home, cool trip:). As soon as we got into Utah the "looks" started. What year?? A '62? WOW!

Outside California, Old Cars Get Noticed. Thats 'cause they are *rare*. Around here anything more than 10 years old is rare. More than 20 qualifies it for Parade Duty.

No, there are no Pintos left either, thank God :).

Check out "Magnificent" on my web page to get an idea.

I'm not a big fan of Model Ts but watching them cut up that one, even as butt ugly as it was, hurt. A Lot. You could tell that even the crew, presumably mostly natives of the LA area & used to a cornucopia of old iron, didn't feel good about it.

    Just my .86 x $.02,

    H.

Well, I wasn't trying to give the impression T's were laying around on every streetcorner here - they're just not rare. My son hauled a pair of T front fenders, and a set of Vickey rear quarters out of a desert dump about 6 months ago. Shot through with bulletholes, but still restorable. We also found a rolled '28 Plymouth sedan with a few good parts still on it in a ditch last year. We pulled the head (flathead), and we may go back for more parts (like the rumbleseat) if I can find an interested buyer. We also recovered a WC52 Dodge Weapons Carrier from a friend's ranch, and we've been slowly selling parts. I haven't watched Boyd's show too often, but I've seen it a time or 2, and discussed him with my brother-in-law, who has appeared on Monster Garage several times. We both think he kind of acts like a jerk.

Buddy of mine, street rodder, has a shirt that says something like, ' anybody can restore one, takes a man to cut one up.' Has a guy standing there with atorch in his hand ready to cut up an old car.
As far as the tires go, my Pop, a WWII vet, to this day can't figure out why they'd use " those #%^&*@ tires on a JEEP." He hated them. Just his 2 cents. I never had any.

Thanks Ron. It's from Jamestown CO, beat daily as a wood hauler in the mountains by my daughter. It's not that great up close (frame broken and field welded three times) just a lot of body work done.

Here's the site that sells them http://www.randys-racemart.com/tirgroovir.html
Looks like they went up about $15. since I looked last. Siping is supposed to give you longer tire life because the tires run cooler. I know it's popular here in the northeast on M/Ts because of rain and better traction.

The difference is the 'fore mentioned shoulder of the tread. the NDTs has the square shoulder and the NDCCs have the rounded shoulder. Check out the pics in the above post.
performance wise it would only show up in an "offroad" situation(NDCCs would have less bite in mud). Since most of your driving is going to be "onroad" you will not notice any difference other lees road noise.

80cj...thanks for the Coker link! Their local distributor is actually not far from my office, and I've already had them scoped out as a source, that's where I plan to buy them. The price is right, now all I need is money......story of my life.

Coker had them either way. At the time I didn't know the difference or even why there was a difference. 2 months after I bought mine (Aug 2004) they came out with the Firestone (US Army) repros, 6.50 X 16s.
