Long day of work on the Jeep today... did some more tuning and got it running well enough that I confidently put in 100 miles of 45mph cruising without incident. Also installed spare tire carrier, rear bumperettes, front bumper rope, and added some white paint details to it.

Love the "4 wheel drive" on the tailgate. Mesa Verde is chilling in the background.

Opened up the new CB and cleaned everything out. Still don't know if it actually works.

Also managed to get myself an old Bellview winch. Should fit in nicely on the CJ once it's all cleaned up.

Looks lke you got the AC power cable with it, you'll need a DC cable. The 9 pin connector (& crystals for other channels) are available from this guy-

    http://www.kenselectronics.com/

    Schematic & manuals are here-

    http://www.cbtricks.com/radios/ef_johnson/messenger_1/index.htm

If you get it working on AC & go to try it on DC when you turn it on listen for a buzzing noise coming from the round can in the back, if no noise read this-

    http://www.skywaves.ar88.net/commrx/Maintenance/Waking Up.doc.pdf

Let me know if you need any help with it,

    H.

Wow... thanks a lot for the info. It will definitely be useful.

One question: AC vs DC power plug? I'm confused on that one. In the attached pic of the underside of the chassis, what would need to be changed? I assumed that the 242-128 model that shows an operating voltage of 117/12V needed no modifications to run either.

Took the CJ out on its maiden off-road voyage. It wasn't anything tough, but a good test run to see how it does. Headed up La Plata canyon to Kennebec Pass (11,680ft elevation) just west of Durango. No problems were had except for the signal wire vibrated loose from the coil and the Jeep died, easy fix though. I was expecting to have some issues with the altitude, but the CJ ran like a champ.

Some pics from the trip with my friends in their Razr.

It's the black round thing that plugs in the back that's the difference- how it's wired determines whether the radio will run on 117 AC or 12 DC. The schematic has the two different wiring setups but from the red & black wires showing at the top of the pic it looks like you already have a 12V plug set up so no worries there.

Cool, thanks. After cleaning the chassis and inspecting for questionable parts or connections, I just finished hooking it up to power and seeing what it does.

    1. It didn't explode.
    2. Vibrator works.
    3. Power light works.
    4. Transmit light works.
    5. No pop from speaker when I turned radio on and no static/sound with any adjustments of squelch or volume.

You won't get an "On Pop", takes about 30 seconds for the tubes to warm up.

Try switching the channel switch to see if you hear a "click" noise out the speaker. Leave the squelch conter clockwise, just far enough to turn it on but no further.

You may not get much noise out of it without an antenna.

Touch the center terminal of the volume control with the tip of a screwdriver, you should hear some scratch/buzz. DON'T be touching the chassis with any part of your body while doing that- there's enough voltage in there to ruin your whole day- Permanently. :(

The red light indicates the transmit section is working, at least a bit.

I'll take a look, thanks again. This radio is very different than the only other restoration I have done (this old Knight "magic eye" AM/shortwave tabletop.)

Went through and replaced every paper resistor 1-by-1 with modern ones, replaced and rewound the cracked antenna, and had to rebuild all of the controls... that was enough of a project to make me realize that I never wanted to do it again... haha

More work done on the Jeep... was supposed to be a LOT more, but it turns out that Kaiser Willys sent me the wrong overdrive for my Jeep (even after confirming over the phone). Needless to say, I'm pretty disappointed about that.

Installed my winch and winch plate. Didn't get a chance to hook it up and test it yet, still looking for the cable controls for it.

Also rebuilt most of the steering components... lots of shiny stuff under there now..

Looks like an old Warn M6000 or a bellview. They do work really well as long as you can deal with no power out. No, I won't sell you the interior controls out of my Commando. The guy at Warn told me to just don't let the motor spin backwards.

I have that same winch but haven't installed yet. No controls came with mine but seems easy enough to rig up some of those turn-to-lock push-pull cables and some heavy duty solenoids in series (redundancy in case one welds itself closed under load). I like the period-correct equipment.

The period correct power supply was actually a knife switch worked by a cable. A redundant solenoid in there probably wouldn't be a bad Idea. I have never had a problem with mine but a friend did manage to mash his jeep fender into a tree when a solenoid stuck. If you look at the brake and dog clutch levers, they are designed to also be manually operated as well. Sort of against all of the approved practices we have now, you are too close to the winch cable.

Fine with me, that's why I posted them. It saved me the effort of fighting through Photobucket again
I hope you found a few more enjoyable photos if you went through everything in my Photobucket stuff.
