So the story so far, the fuel tank was knackered and it was going to cost me a fortune to ship one over so I built my own, even built a bender to make it.

3 sides completed, the centre plate is just as a web to give strength and stop deformation when welding

Dummy fitting of tank to ensure fit and work out bracketry - oh and someone had removed the rear cross member so I made a new one

View from the front, need to make a skid plate but it should be ok as the diff is much lower, made the fuel outlet at the top so it was protected

Next, I wasn't happy with the original bumper, someone had hacked it up and welded on a huge tow hitch the would drag in the mud so I made my own with a tyre carrier attached.

Mock up with the swing out carrier, took awhile to getthe pivot correct, moulded in some fender protection aswell, took alot of time but I think it was worth it, the pipe is welded inside the bumper not just attached the the end

Pivot finalised and working, locking catch in place

Actual tyre carrier, built to accomodate 35" tyres if I do so change

Dummy fitted to the jeep to check everything, not bad

    Swing out works perfectly

I'm now working on the small bits of rust, not much actually especially for a 35 year old vehicle, I'm still working on an engine/transmission replacement for it, haven't figured out exactly what way I'm going to do it but I'll figure it shortly.

So I started on the rear tailgate yesterday, the bottom lip and hinges had rusted completly, first off I cleaned off the paint

As you can see from the photo the rust was quite bad, however upon stripping I found that it had been patched before and done badly using brazing methods,

So I'm going to have to cut the bad section out and rebuild the lower section and hinges, not sure if I'm going to keep/restore the old hinges or not or replace with a more modern style hinge

Not as close as you think. Google maps shows it's about 1,500 miles from Dublin to Vienna. Dublin to NYC is about 3,000 miles. So yes, it's closer, but still not what most people would call "close".

Here is how I fixed my tailgate, I used 1/2 schedule 40 pipe for the bottom rail and 18 gauge sheet metal for the rest.

Gee its been a while since I've posted on here, so I better update the progress

So I finished the tailgate repair:

Then I changed the fuel filler location, it better suits my tank and also easier to get at:

Then I decided it was time to attack the rust, so off with the body:

Then the lovely job of cleaning off the underseal:

The first bit of rust was the stiffners and the tunnel and wings off the tunnel:

So I fixed the tunnel rust, patched the holes and rewelded it back in:

Then I remade the wings off the tunnel and welded them back in:

Then I started to make new stiffners:

Then I removed the front section and fixed the holes, replaced the bad panel and rewelded it back together:

Oh and I found myself an engine, an AMC 360, T150 box and Dana 20 transfer,

Perfect timing on those body supports....What size did you use?

I need to do mine and am on the fence of half-***, repro's, or something just like you shown....From another thread and your pics I'm thinking thats the way to go!!

    Thanks!!

And I also got a fresh idea for a homemade engine-to-tranny adapter, LOL!!

The body supports are 80mm x 40mm x 2.5mm Box (not sure of imperial equivalent), its nearly a perfect match to that of the original overall web, I used 40mm high to give a little of a body lift.

You would give that an "A" (for effort) well I would have loved you as my teacher, may have done better at school then. Its the worst piece of engineering I have seen in a long while, I'm surprised it stayed put for so long, not one nyloc or spring washer, even 2 of the bolts are missing. She was so badly done I found a replacement Dana 20 transfer with my new engine/gearbox setup as i was unsure at what damage would have been done to it. (internally/externally) Then again it starts to explain some of the other dodgy things I've found on the jeep during the teardown (namley the disc pads the wrong way round) some people should just stay far far away from vehicles and mechanics.chainsawguy
