I have a 1962 CJ5 - I recently installed a replacement transmission and had the bell housing off but did nothing to the clutch except hook it back up again.

This doesn't happen every time (mostly happens when warm) but sometimes if I try starting in gear with the clutch depressed the vehicle will "lurch." We've adjusted the clutch once but the problem hasn't gone away.

It starts OK in neutral - shifts smoothly with no grinding - otherwise appears to operate normally.

    Any ideas?

    Dan,
The Jeep was not run for over ten months. That said, since we put it back together I've put over 300 miles on it... Much of it riding trails that exercised all the gears and hi-low range. Like I said, other than the occasional jerky start, it runs normally.
    thanks for your interest...

should be fairly new parts in the clutch as well. mileage wise at least... I think I replaced everything in there because one of the fingers on the original was binding up.

On the shift linkages, are the "bellcranks" on the pivot rods straight up and down when the clutch is let out? I know there wasn't much if any slop in the clutch linkage so that shouldn't be a problem.

Termin8ed. I thought you said that you re-did the clutch so I was surprised it was acting up. It is almost like it is failing to let go when the pedal is pushed in. We're going to adjust the cable a little more and see if that helps.... Otherwise, it's head scratching time.... I'll look at the bellcranks and see if anything looks out of alignment.
