    hello
    there is a tiny switch
just to the right of the 3 big
    heat control knobs
that is supposed to be an
original option for a map lite
which is just behind the gear shift
at the bottom of the panel.
    is this true?

My 71 model has one in that exact place, the best I could tell it was original.

I have never seen that before and in the dealer literature I did not see it listed as an option. I also don't remember seeing any mention of it in the service manual wiring diagram. I will look again tonight. I am not saying it definitely was not an option. MHO is that it wasn't though.

    David,

I don't believe a maplight was offered as a FACTORY option for '75....at least my '75 sales literature does not mention it. However, it does mention that many options could be dealer installed. This might be the case with your maplight.

Attached are a few photos of my '75 w/maplight. I installed it just after I bought the jeep (1982) and I wired a switch just below the light itself. It stayed that way till just recently when I removed the switch and tied the light into the headlight switch.

If I'm not mistaken, Jeep used the same headlight switch for the CJ that was used on the same model year Cherokee/Pickup/Wagoneer that all had dome lights. If you notice, there is a small indent in the turning of the light switch . This indent activated the domelight on the other models. Pretty easy to wire this so that it works on the CJ too.

Thanks for the compliment. Had to swap out the speedometer because the temperature gauge went out. and I couldn't find the proper replacement for the gauge only. If you notice the VDO gauge reads temp/fuel in the opposite direction of the factory gauge.......those wild and wacky overseas manufacturers !!

Actual mileage is the 176 plus about 32,000. When I first got OLDYLR, we used to do alot of 4-wheelin', so I added the sidebars and a 8000# Warn winch. Twenty years later, I take her out at least once a week to keep everything lubricated, prevent flat spots on the tires, keep the Carter YF clean, and blow the cobwebs off.

Great to see various modifications to the CJ's, but I particularly like to see CJ's restored to original. Refreshing to see posters that find these gems and want to keep them original, such as IOWA.

I could not agree more! There is nothing sweeter then a cherry CJ5 that looks like it just pulled out of Toledo. Very nice interiors, both of you. As soon as I am done with my 74 l will post some pics.

OEM amp and oil press gauges
    for my '75?

You can find both if you look hard enough. The amp gauge may be available on ebay. I believe the oil pressure gauge is different in 75 then in previous years. Actually they both may be out on ebay.

the switch in the pic is not factory, nor a factory dealer option
it has been added by someone, somewhere, sometime for your "map" light
the only switch to be in that panel would be the fan switch

Check the Stewart-Warner catalog for the gauges. I believe they were the OEM source, and their aftermarket gauges are nearly identical.

My preference is for the full-sweep mechanical oil pressure gauge (as in springerfever's dash above) and a volts meter instead of an ammeter. An ammeter requires that the full charging current run through it, which I think is a hazard. A voltmeter only requires a small gauge sense wire. The voltmeter was standard after 1974 IIRC.

BTW I've seen a lot of Intermediate dashes new from the factory, and none of them had a map light.

In IOWA's reply #12 the picture of the speedometer shows an OIL and AMP idiot light just below the 0 and 90 on the speedometer.

    My question is :

When were these incorporated into the cluster, why were they removed, and were they/are they functional ?

My '75 original cluster does not have these idiot lights, yet the reproduction I replaced it with, does. I thought the repro had these in order to cover a greater year range, but according to this picture, these idiot lights were on a '73.

Seems kind'a redundant to have the idiot lights in conjunction with much more accurate and useful gauges. Perhaps there was a base model of the CJ w/o gauges and the driver relied on the idiot lights for problems.
If that were the case, you would think the wiring harness on all CJ's would include wiring/senders to trigger these lights whether used or not.

Come to think of it.......neither one of my clusters have bulbs for these idiot lights.......what gives ?

My 71 had the idiot lights and the factory Stewart Warner oil and amp gauge, both were wired up when I got the Jeep, the amp gauge however had been fry'd and the gauge was disconnected and the wire capped off.
