Making My CJ5 Into A CJ6/II

Kinda sad to think of how free and open things were back then compared to now. I'm glad to have experienced it back in the early 70s, but sometimes it makes it harder now, at times.

gunner, Your right about that! ...........I don't make a habit of looking back in the rear view mirror.........but sometimes having the ability to remember some of these places like they were is pretty neat............

Years back when we hunted Colorado on BLM land most places would take us 2-3 days to get in to where we hunted. Never see another person nor a vehicle for 2 weeks.........then the Oil Shale people decided that there was oil in some of that Real Estate. The roads they cut in were 20 ft wide ,in some places you could now make the same trip in a couple of hours. Progress!

 

Yea I still have my 5 chromies with moons from the old days. The 2 front moons were the ones with the holes in the center for the lockout hubs. I still have a True trac mounted on one. Currently have them on my flattie project for rollin around the shop.

The bead surfaces are so beat up on 3 of them from banging on rocks that they don't seal up anymore or I'd still run 'em.
I came from the days when a chrome wheel made any kind of rig look better; I still like the look.

I'm with you .......love the old look of a clean chrome wheel..........That's a nice flattie you have there and a few others. Always nice to have the storage space!

Did a 67 Chevelle for my daughter a few years back. Totally dead stock.........except for the Chrome Wheels and the Baby Moon's. Still have the original rims and hub caps.

 

Oh man yer killin me. My first hot rod was a metallic blue 67 Chevelle SS396. I got older and needed a truck so I (head hangin in shame) traded it.
Still regretting it.

Little Sluice, tree fell down a couple years back and was cut up and hauled away.

That's a sweet chevelle. My first car was a 67 chevelle although not a ss or anywhere near stock it was a 67 chevelle Malibu sport coupe my dad gave it to me when I was 2yrs old it was his way of keeping cars around when mom said he had to much junk around the house that was in 1992 here is how it sets now

Tarry, I see a lot of parallels in my own life, including the same color blue CJ with a white Whitco Top (but a 225), the big difference being I didn't own a camera until 69 or 70.

I don't spend a lot of time looking back either. Yep, a lot of places I used to wheel are closed to motorized use now. But, frankly, I don't bemoan that fact. Those closed places look a whole lot better then the places that are still open and I find myself still visiting those places-with a backpack. Not sure how far into gezzerhood one can do that but fully intend to push it to the limit.

There are still places in this state where you can wheel and not see anybody for several days and I am very thankfull for that.

And how is your project coming along?.........................No Not the end of this Story , got a long way to go, just got jambed up with business and another project so I will be posting more pictures hopefully today...........That Jeep also ended with a 225 and quite honestly the only way I can tell when is if I can catch a glimpse of the exhaust.........I'll expand on that in my next entry here shortly.

I'm glad you and other folks are enjoying the ride as much as I am in looking back.

I think threads like this one ought to be in their own topic area rather than getting lost in some broader catagory. Any interest from the mods for creating a separate "historical" section? I wouldn't have expected to find this thread in the "builds" and it most definately should not be OT where it would be eventually deleted.

That's a great point............and there is a build coming and that's why I thought it should be here...........and folks like Nick M who have already seen parts of the build can decide where it best fits.......... I just did not want the story before the story not to be told.

 

Just leave it here. Be silly to split it off into two threads. Then people will miss the history of the jeep to go along with the build thread.

 

Ok.......I'm back!... How about some more Rubicon? Some of these were dated 1977. And Yes I did have a Buick V6 225 in there by now in fact I'm thinking I did that in about 1973 along with putting in a Manual Saginaw Gear Box ...should have went power then but that's another story........still had the T-90 3-speed and 4:27 gears with only a powr-lok in the rear....Not your best gear combo for this trail, lots of clutch slipping getting up over rocks.........but we were young and although some Jeeps I seen did have some truck transmissions and welded spiders , most of that was pretty new.
