My Jeep sits in a lower garage. When I want to get it out, I just drive on the grass. My wife's Suburban and my Jeep trailer sit on the actual drive way to the lower garage. This hasn't been a problem until this last couple of snows. The path I have been using has turned to Ice. So when I tried to get the Jeep out to plow the driveway today, going uphill on ice just doesn't work. Out of all of this I noticed that I am not using 4 wheel drive, but 3 wheel drive.

I have powertrax all locks in the front and rear. So either the locker is broken or I broke an axle shaft. The rear shafts are Moser one piece axles, and I havn't done anything stupid that I can think of.........:?

I am going to put it in the garage tomorrow and pull the rear diff cover to take a look.

Now here's my question. Santa left a True trac limited slip under the tree this year, What is the possibility of putting the ring gear on the new differential and having it fit correctly???????? Or will that require the pinion gear to be reset?

If the differential was setup correctly with the locker then you won't have to do anything to the pinion depth, all you will have to do is set the backlash.

I'd find out what was wrong before I made up my mind to swap carriers.

What is a powertrax all lock?
Is it a locker like the lock-rite or a limited slip?
I have never heard of the "All-Lock"

I knew when I typed that it was wrong but I couldn't remember what it was called......

I went back thru the receipts and found it, Power trac no-slip Purchased Feb of 02, Warranty replaced Aug 02. If it is bad I can't complain, it's been from Pa To Ca 4 times since then.

Yea, I'll find out tomorrow.......... I mean later today.......... Can't sleep tonight.

    Thanks all

There have been a rash of Power Trac failures around here. Mostly in front axles though.

Hopefully you can find the problem and fix it. Since the true trac is a limited slip. there is no guarantee that you will have power to both wheels if you go to it anyway.
If you did switch to the true-trac, (or anytime you change gears or the differential) you would want to be prepared to make some changes with set-up. Test it with your gear marking compound, and also check the backlash. Like Autotech1984 said, pinion depth often should stay the same.

Well the locker is toast, only 1 surface is damaged though, and the pins are in good shape. I will probably try to get replacement parts to restore the locker to operational condition. Then store the diff on the shelf.

I looked at putting in the true trac...... nothing is EVER easy. I have a press, but I couldn't find a way to get the bearing off. So tomorrow I'll run to flaps, pickup new bearings, $14 ea, but I doubt they will have a shim kit. If the new bearings are the same thickness as the old ones,(.845 - .850) I can use the original shims .095 on the left and .090 on the right. But somehow I don't expect that to be the case:rofl:

Have fun. Take your existing backlash and try to set the Trutrac to the same.

    " of mice and men"

Murphy was in full swing today. Went to flaps, bought new bearing and a thermostat for my daughters Cherokee. Pressed the bearings onto the true trac, set it in the diff. long story short the preload shims are too thick for the new diff.

I'll go to 4wd tomorrow and hope they have the shim kit in stock.

Then replaced my daughters thermostat, broke the housing, went back into town managed to get a new one.

    Time to quit
