Keeping the hood up...

    I'm swapping on an intermediate w/s...and by looking at how things line up.

    Right now the tall loop that used to engage the latch on the early w/s hits the w/s gasket - any force there and it would break the glass.

    I'm guessing that all intermediates used prop rods. If that's true, is the prop rod part of the hood? Any pics?

    Geez, it's been a while ... IIRC the rod snaps into a clip on right underside ofthe hood. The left side has a right-angle bend and ball on the end that is held by a bracket. I think you could easily transplant an intermediate prop if you wanted to. Theres a bracket on the left side grill stay rod with a hole the rod drops into. Anyway, I could still fold my hood up against the windshield as long as I put something between to keep it from scratching the paint; a shop rag was enough if the soft top was off, or else the vinyl of the top. I'd use the rod as a handle and tip the hood back against the windshield from the front of the Jeep.

    Mine hits just under the seal on the glass. I've been using a shop towel inbetween until I solve the problem. Let me know what works for you.

    Well, first thought was to find a '68 - '71 hood so that I could just swap it straight on. But then I lose the Boyink Door...:(

    So my fallback is a spare hood I got with the '58 6 that I sold. It's a military hood and has a shovel bracket underneath that I want to use:

    I'll add the two "side by side" loops for the w/s to rest on when down.

    I'll take off the front tall loop and steal Lynns idea of using a TJ rubber hood bumper (used in place of the tall loops for a w/s rest), ideally the same kinda thing but about 3" in diameter to cover the loop holes, or the holes will just have to show.

    I fitted to the hood lift kit from Quadratec, and I can't recommend it enough. It makes lifting the hood 1000 times easier, and holds it in place at a near vertical angle giving plenty of access to the engine bay. The reason I mention, is that after this kit you don;t need to props at all.

    Just my £0.02 (us brits work in sterling...)

    I saw those, Aldo -- but I *think* they're for the AMC era Jeeps only, meaning they'd be too long to work on my Kaiser-era short nose Jeep. I can live with the hood resting against the w/s, if I can figure out how to hide the holes from re-arranging the hood hardware.

    What Tim said is correct, although backwards. My prop rod connects to the hood on the passenger side and pivots from there. There are clips on the inside of the hood that hold the rod up when not in use.

    If you would like pictures I would be happy to snap a few for you, but I can't do it until tomorrow because the Jeep is at work and I'm not! HTH

    Thanks Steve - I think I'm just going to stay simple on this one and figure out a way to not need the prop rod...

    You could use the TJ hood bumpers. They'd hit the windshield instead, and be soft.

    What's the diameter of those? I need 3" to both cover the holes from the loop and get between the hood and w/s.

    Without having one in front of me... I'd say the dia of a TJ hood bumper is 1.5".
    I just looked at a 2" diameter circle and I know it's smaller than that.

    Can you just fill the holes with a footman loop?
    I did that with the '68/69 hood I'm using. Took those hideous reflector things off of the side of the hood. Cut up a couple footman loops, welded them together to make a larger-than-normal footman loop that bolts in place in those holes. Looks like they belong there ;) :D

    Footman loops look to be 3/4" wider or so than the taller hood loops. I could cut one down...but it'd look kinda silly.

    I'll probably just put a couple carriage or allen headed bolts in the holes and paint over them. I have 4 "mystery holes" on the top of the cowl that need to need to get plugged - might as well do them the same.
