Jerry Can mount

It's been a long time coming, but I finally got around to mounting the gas can bracket on my tailgate. I've sanded an painted the bracket, and I ordered a new can from Walcks. It turns out that the new cans don't fit in the older brackets! The cans are too large to even squeeze in... so I've got a few 2.5 gallon older cans that work.


In retrospect, I may have mounted it too high. But I wanted to be able to drop the tailgate onto the tension of the chains, and have the mount clear my bumper and pintle. I guess it'll have to grow on me.


I used one inch aluminum spacers to clear the upper lip of the tailgate. Also used neoprene backed washers to keep the ever-present water out (Washington residents understand). All hardware stainless.

 

Well, just my personal opinion. DON'T PUT THE GAS CAN ON THE TAILGATE. Unless you have a m38 tailgate with the reinforcement parts built in, otherwise, quite soon you will have cracks starting on your freshly painted Jeep. Some things I learned the hard way too.
I'm sorry if I came in sounding a bit harsh about this but the standard jeep tailgate isn't designed for this weight or the vibration that comes along with adding weight to them. It's why all the spare tire carrier/ gas can carriers were develloped years ago to fit these Jeeps. Whitco, Kayline amomg others.
You need to do a search on the bumper mounted carriers that people have built or see if you can find something on Craigslist or Ebay that is a period correct carrier that fits your Jeep.

 

Well... now I've got four holes in my tailgate!

Maybe the little cans on his freshly restored jeep will work better than a 5 gallon can on a beater jeep

not good for the tailgate for sure, but I like the look, especially with the smaller can. maybe some kind of a little brace on the inside like this...?!

 

Nicely done. I would reinforce it too. Leave the can empty if you drive daily. Old cans be found and fixed up if they aren't rusted out. If they are holes or other leaks treat as you would a gas tank. Seal the holes and use a good tank lining system. It has to be a good one.

 

Yeah I'll be keeping the small cans then. If I need a 5 gallon, I'll just put it inside. If I notice any stress I'll install a bracket, which should be incredibly easy. Thanks all for the input.

I would do a brace first because by the time you see the stress and distortion it has already started. Your tailgate looks way to nice to watch cracks form.

 

Ok, I'm convinced. I'll fab something up.
