This heat push/pull knob was in the dash upper left of the speedo when I got it. It was hooked to the flap door in the stock heater.

The heater controls below the dash have a slide control to control heat, but it was hooked to one of those inline valves in a heater hose.

Most I have talked to said the slide control went to the door flap on the stock heater.
If so, what the heck is this thing! Anyone seen one?

dont think its stock...my heat/vent system is a little messed up and i am weird and it's usually one of the first things i look at, and on almost all others i have seen the slide controls the flaps.

i think that is just a replacement part...

edit: are u saying they are reversed? i think who replaced it may have switched them...i dont think slide controls actual heat temp...

Let me clarify, I have the 3 pushbutton control that bolts under the dash, it is a vacuum control thing, controls the flaps/doors that are in the heater system UNDER THE DASH. It also has the fan switch and heat/cool slider thing.

From what I have gathered, the heat/cool slider thing controls the air door LOCATED IN THE HEATER ASSEMBLY UNDER THE HOOD, the piece the big vent hose connects to.

In my case, the heat/cool slider went to a valve inline one of the heater hoses, and the pictured push/pull went to the air door under the hood.

I guess if no one else has seen it, it probably ain't stock...

Not surprising, my under hood heater box had been hacked up to accept a bigger heater core that stuck out the side, however it actually looked like it could be stock, was somewhat well done if you see what I mean, and I thought it was until I saw one that actually was right....
Guess previous owner did some heater mods....

Greg: Your observations are correct. On my '68 it's the same as you described. The "slide" heat control connects to the flap in the heater box under the hood. Sounds like someone didn't like that and put a "seperate" one in. You should be able to convert it back to the orig. configureation.

Actually, I think it might be stock... We talked, a long while back, about how some Jeeps had valves in the heater hoses to stop the flow of coolant through the heater core. With the slide positioned to "cool", the flow of coolant would not go through the heater core. Then, you could open the flap in the heat plentum (via the cable pictured above) and fresh, cool, air from the outside (via the air duct to the grill) would enter the cab. If you didn't have the valve in the heater hose, the air would heat as it passed over the heater core, and would serve no purpose in the summer.

If you remove the valve, I'm sure Baby John would buy the valve and the cable above too - if you wanted to sell it...

Sounds like a good explanation, but since it says push for heat or vent it does sound like it would go to a flapper like it was hooked to. Albeit that it was hooked up wrong apparently.

Thanks for all the replies. 53Flattie, your reasoning is exactly like mine. That is how I will probably reassemble it.

Was kinda hoping someone else would say they had at least saw one like it though!!
