Something tells me the trak lok on my DJ is probably no good The jeep was used pretty hard with poor maintenance Just the sheer # of miles it probably racked up would make me suspicious of the trak lok still functioning

Yesterday, I jacked up one side and spun the wheel. With the other tire still firmly on the concrete, I could spin the free wheel pretty easily. There was still some resistance, but not a whole lot.

Is it safe to assume the trak lok needs rebuild or replacement? I got the costs for a rebuild from Randy's R&P (they're just down the road from me)

I'm thinking about a powerlok for it anyhow, as I want to get off road with it as well as having a daily driver.

If you can easily turn the wheel by hand with the other one on the ground then yes, the clutches are worn out.

In my opinion if you are going to do any off road driving trash the Trak Lok and get the Power Lok. After the 3 breaks and rebuilds in less than 2 years on my Trak Lok I gave up and put a Detroit in it. One of the 3 best investments I have made to date.

I put a Detroit truetrac in mine. I ditched the spool for better street performance. It hooks up well, but is very mild on road. My wheelbase is stock.

    Thanks all.

The DJ will have the 153, a T5, 3.73 gears and 225/75/15 tires. Pretty mild stuff as timgr points out. And it's just a 2x4. It's surprising where you can go with 2 wheel drive and a good posi, but it's mostly going to be for daily use.

I called Randy's R&P a few days ago and got some parts quotes for the trac lok parts. Not bad if I do it myself. Never done one before, so search will be my friend.

But the whole rear end needs an overhaul. If I do that, I may just spring for a better system in there. True trac/powerlock etc are all more expensive though I have the time to source a used unit.
