Depends. The V8 CJs are pretty easy to convert to power steering, if you have manual steering. If it's manual steering, another manual steering gear would be no different from what you already have.

You mentioned you adjusted the steering gear. I'd suggest that, if you want to adjust the steering gear, you follow the procedure in the TSM. They show how to do it with the steering gear on the bench - you can't do it properly with the gear in the chassis. Specifically, you need to adjust the end play of the worm before you adjust the gear mesh. The screw on the top of the gear is the mesh adjustment, and tightening that without adjusting the end play will damage the gear and the steering could bind in service.

I was thinking that yours is 44 years old with unknown maintenance, that it might be done for. While the one I have is not perfect it might have been better than yours and I am willing to donate it if it gets you up and running faster. That's all. It's super easy to convert to power steering though.

Ohh see, I sure appreciate that. Yeah it might be a little while before I get to power steering. The first thing on my list is springs and shackle bushings. The springs I have now are riding on the bump stops, and my shackle bushings no longer exsit so I am riding on the bolt at the moment.

Hopefully we can get that straitened out for ya. (y) The front end anyway. My jeep has 9/16" grease-able bolts throughout the suspension, and polyurethane bushings. Works well and I like the set up. Welcome to the early jeep project madness.

agreed...I did just the mesh gear on my cj7 and it eventually bound and broke while driving 30 mph 1000 miles from home. Fortunately it only went over a curb and sidewalk into the edge of an intersection before I got it stopped with no steering. Scary and lucky...I swapped to power steering afterwards
