hello everyone, 1st post here, but lurked around here for a while looking for info about my cj5. my question is,

How do i know if i have a renegade one? it would seem my jeep has all the things that a renegade had but is missing others, so far what i have got for what it does have is it was painted light blue(key word was, its primer grey to stop the surface rust for now) the wiring harness of a renegade one, the seats, the wheels (kelsey hays 15x8 ), the notches in the dash under the ammeter and oil pressure meter, its got a 225 v6 with im pretty sure is a t86 behind it. a padded dash and leather sun visors, the roll bar. its missing the rear spare tire mount but i have the rim and tire.

the previous owner that my father bought it from said it was a special edition and was trying to restore it cause the 1st owner put in 5 point harness seats and different rims and tires on it, like i said he said it was a special edition but had no documentation of it. i heard you people where the best at these types of jeeps so i was hopping someone could help me

Pictures needed. A lot of what you mentioned are the additions found on a R1. What about the hood decals?

Built around April 1970. Does it have the dash sticker with build date? Correct rollbar for renegade. Looks like correct ammeter. Most Renegade I's had black with white pinstriped seats, but I'm not sure what the blue ones had.

very good, thats the exact date on the dash,I have seen the original gauge too. the rear of my jeep has holes that look like where the spare tire carrier you posted would have been mounted. i also have the rear bench seat that has the same upholstery type as the front seats but its about twice the size of the driver seat. my father said he has changed the gauge cause it leaked.

Sender must have leaked, it is an electric gauge not mechanical. Here's the original oil pressure sender:

The lights in the spare carrier pictures I posted are NOT original (I think) and neither are the backup lights.

    Renegade I equipment from memory:
    KH 15X8 steel wheels
Stripes on front end (not on hood blister unless '71 model year Renegade I or II)
Ammeter resistor and wiring harness on firewall under hood
    Ammeter
    Oil pressure gauge
    Visors
White pinstriped black seats (orange and green ones for sure)
    Dash pad
    Rollbar
    Swing away spare tire carrier
    Engine oil pan skid plate
Heavy duty spring package (I can't remember the leaf count front and rear, I think it might be 7 and 11)

I think the oil pan skid plate is nearly a dead giveaway.
Only the Renegades had that option.
The only other way to get that is to make one or borrow from a Renegade.

Zoomer forgot to mention the HD frame.
The HD frames have gussetting above the spring pivot brackets.
They have full gussetting at the front frame horns.
They also have stiffners located above the axle bumpers.

I would sure like to see some pictures of these HD frame options. Anyone?
Also a pic of the engine oil pan skid plate.

I need to fab these up once I see what they look like.

Gusseting = Stiffner = metal reinforcements that are commonly formed from various thickness of plate.

In this case the frame horn gussets are the formed inner plates that fit on the inside of the foreward most portion of the frame channel.

The 4 spring pivot brackets are at the opposite ends from the spring shackles.
The spring pivot gussets are in the form of a plate that is welded to the inner portion of the frame channel.

Ken's right, I forgot about the frame.

Here is the bracket above the front spring hangers:

I'm not as sure as Ken about the front frame horn gussets. I've asked about them before and I don't think there was a definite answer if they were part of the heavy duty frame or Renegade or not. Here is a picture of the boxing on the inside of my front frame horns:

Unlike the oil pan skid plate the HD frames were not specific to only the Renegade I or II.
That said I believe that all Renegade I or II will have the HD frames.
HD frames were also used on other CJ's like the camper special.
They were used from 1969 through 1971.
