Hello all, I am currently overhauling my 1970 stainless steel cj5, it is not running yet so i have not had a chance to drive it. My question is it has a 225 with a t14 trans, dana 18 t-case with an overdrive with 33"tires. Can anyone tell me how this set up drives on the freeway at 65 mph, does it drive at that speed with no problem or is it at its limit.

What axle ratio? If it's 3.73:1, you'll be loafing along, for a Jeep.

With 4.88s, it's loud but ok. Even with 3.73s, there will be a lot of wind, gear, and tire noise.

You can find the engine RPM from many different calculators on the web.

    2422 with 4.88s
    1851 with 3.73s

I wouldn't think it to be anywhere near its limit at legal freeway speeds even with 4.88 gears.
My '70 has the 225, T14 and Warn OD with 4.88 gears. It cruises just fine at 65, though the wind noise and tire noise is pretty loud. I have 31" tires.
With the handling of these short wheelbase vehicles, I feel 60 MPH is fast enough. The torque and gearing will allow for much faster if you feel brave enough.

Seriously, I have this same combination with 4:88 gears without the OD. I can easily run 60. There's plenty of wind and road noise.

The Jeep will cruise just fine at that speed. If you have a soft top , the OD whine and the top flapping will be deafening. If you have no top, the wind will beat you to death!

I've caught myself running 80+ on the turnpikes around here (75 mph speed limit) and its quite comfortable. All my gearboxes have been very recently rebuilt and I have a new AA OD. I have peel and stick sound deadening, jute, and carpet. My exhaust exits out the rear corner. I admit the top sounds like a sheet in a strong wind, but overall Pete is relatively quiet. My wife and I converse at normal levels and the stereo sounds great. It takes a bit of work to keep the sound down but its not impossible.

As to running 80+, I wouldn't recommend it unless you have done a saginaw swap in steering (ps or man). The Ross steering is problematic, way too many joints for tight precise steering.

Mine steers/ handles fine at 70-75, with Ross steering. But then, I've only put about 60K miles on it....

Wow, thanks for everyones input, I will will see if i have 4:88 gears this weekend. i am not to worried about the wind and tire noise, i spent alot of hours strapped in the back of my dads 1967 cj as a boy and thought the noise was part of the fun. it does not sound like i will have any problems keeping up to speed on the freeway, my concern was i live in sothern california and 90% of the drivers on the road are complete idiots that think if you are not driving 20 mph over the speed limit you are a jerk and in there way. a few other questions i had were will i have a problem towing the jeep behind my motorhome, and how common is a stainless steel body.

    thanks Dave

Many years ago I drove my Jeep over to White Sands Missile Range for a service call. I was heading home on highway 70 and I went around a truck. He was clipping along about 70 and I had no trouble passing him. I didn't have a mic on my CB, but I could hear. I heard him say, "Wow, that's the first time I've had my doors blown off by a Jeep!".

I do have a t14 with 3.63 gears. It shows about 2800 RPM at 60.

I'm sure the others will chime in, but I don't think a stainless steel body is common.

I recall they were available from MD Juan, but are not available any more. Plenty of shiny stainless Jeepneys in the PI.

    Stainless Jeeps are not common.
"Jewels" stainless Jeeps are quite rare.
All stainless Jewels "CJ-5" is EXCEDINGLY rare.
With only a handfull known to be in the U.S.

    Is this a Jewels ?
    Got pics ?
If its an "All Stainless Jewels CJ-5" it may possibly have exceptional potential.

    I am Jealous! I am quite comfortable at 50 - 55 in my 1960 with the F-134!

Okay, I lied, 55 is pretty scary!

After going on the jewels stainless jeep website and looked at there products and compairing them to what is on my jeep there is absolutly no dought in my mind that my jeep was manufactured by Jewels. my next thought is what the value of my jeep might be.

    Here's a link to a recent Jewels topic on the CJ-3B B.B.:
    http://z4.invisionfree.com/CJ3B_Bulletin_Board/index.php?showtopic=2178

The early 80's timeline fits precisely for the rare production of the Jewels CJ-5.
I can't see enough detail in these small pics to determine if this is a Jewels tub or not.
If you like you can send pics to me at imnacj3b@yahoo.com.
Or better yet send a Photobucket link so that every one on this forum can see your stainless CJ-5.
