Is there anyway I can find out the exact date of manufacture for my Jeep? I think it was registered in 1973, but I don't know for sure. If it was made before the 1st January 1973 then I wont have to pay any road tax on it (£160/$280) per year.

Can I tell from the VIN?

The second number on your V.I.N. will tell you the year it was manufactured, for 1973 it will be #3.

Do you have the vin number label on the dash, it should say. For example my 73 says November 72.

I have been told that the numbers on the 72-75 VINs are random. You can surmise the year of manufacture, but not the month. (I was going to have a reproduction dash sticker made, but I don't know the month of manufacture...)

If you don't have the dash sticker, the engine build date is stamped into the block, at least on the 258s. I'd expect this to be pretty close to the chassis build date.

My official VIN # has a 3 as the second digit, but i'll check the engine to see if there is any further information.

Remember this is a $280 a year question!!

    thanks for your help.

if you have it...vehicle identification plate... should include vin#
    second digit...i.e. J3Ablahblah
the J stands for jeep and the three stands for 1973.
the A in this case stands for "plant of manufactue (toledo), gearbox (auto), and drive (left hand).
    cheers!
