Not sure if your looking for a specific part. I assume what's included in a horn button kit doesn't fit your need>>>Horn Button Kit; 60-75 Jeep CJ5 and CJ6

You may have to explain (or supply a picture of) your horn assembly type so others can attempt to help you out.

You want the brush on the column or under the horn button? Neither was available separately from Jeep.

You mean the phosphor bronze brush on a plastic block that rubs against a sleeve on the steering shaft. The parts book says that is part of the directional switch, not available separately. Jeep part number 5350011, superseded by 5454971. How much of it do you have? Picture?

This is all I have, I presume it is what grounds the horn when you push the button, I’m not sure but that’s my understanding.

Do you own a '74 Jeep?

Your alternatives are to fix what you have, or find a wreck/part-out with turn signal switch you can buy complete. Or, replace the existing column with some other column, either from the junkyard or speed shop.

I’m not sure why the horn button wire attaches to the horn brush, if it’s not part of horn function can someone tell me how to wire it, wire from horn button is in the column somewhere, exits where? By the hornbrush, and the wire coming from the horn itself is supposed to come up the bottom of the outside of the column and plug into the horn brush? Just my perception

Why can't you post a picture of what you have on the Jeep? Since you own the Jeep, what are you missing? That would be more helpful than the picture from the TSM.

You are asking me (or someone else) to interpret the wiring diagram for you. The '74 TSM is available for you to read and download at Jeep® 1974 TSM online - the factory wiring diagram is there. Just guessing - there is a two-wire connection to the horn, so power comes from the wiring harness through the horn, up the wires on the outside of the column, through the brush to the sleeve, up a wire next to the shaft to the horn button. There is a brass disk under the horn button contacting a carbon brush in the steering wheel hub. When you press the horn button, the brass disk contacts the steering column, grounding the disk and sounding the horn. You should confirm this yourself.

Not a lot of parts available for these Jeeps. Parts availability has been discussed a lot in old posts.

I’m missing the part, but here it is on someone else’s Jeep, so no I don’t have a picture of mine! does this wire coming off the horn switch not go to the horn under the hood? I am not asking for an interpretation of any wiring diagram as I have one that is very detailed, maybe I am just misunderstanding the use of this switch, is it for self cancelling turn signals or is it for activation of the horn!

Thanks, I know what the part looks like. I was hoping to make a suggestion of how to fix the part. Since it's missing, your only alternative with this column is to make a replacement. Buying this part will be difficult to impossible, since there never was any aftermarket source other than a complete turn signal switch, and existing columns will be ruined without this part.

It's a piece of plastic with a spring contact. These contacts are typically phosphor bronze, a naturally springy and non-corroding material. Expensive ... https://www.onlinemetals.com/merchant.cfm?pid=17898&step=4&showunits=inches&id=243&top_cat=850 A Some other spring contact would work too.

Horn. The turn signal switch cancels by a rubber wheel that rides against the hub of the steering wheel. Not a very durable or reliable configuration, unfortunately. All this part does is send power to the horn button. Strangely, it was only sold by the factory parts network as part of a complete turn signal switch, connected to the wiring harness for the switch.

Do you think an early one would make a good substitute?

Don't know - I don't think so. The column you have is unique to the Intermediate Jeeps, '72-75 only. I believe the earlier models had a wire that went up the middle of the steering shaft, so there was no need for a separate contact. 1971 and prior has a different seating position and different steering gear, which is quite different from the Intermediates. The later models use a GM column, that is both different in design and appearance from the previous columns. Typical problem with an intermediate - no parts support for many of the secondary systems.

You could ask on the early forum - they are more familiar with the wire path for the Jeeps with Ross steering. Possible that this era of DJ Jeeps (postals) use this part when they got a similar column to yours. DJ columns are not plentiful anymore since they are often used for steering swaps in early Jeeps, but they are out there.
