Are hood hinges the same '55 and up? I see some listings online that say '54-'95 and some that say '76-'95. I lost the pass side cowl piece and need to replace it.

I'd guess the latter is right...at some point they stopped being able to pull apart.

They will fit, but as Boyink noted, they aren't correct as they are not pull apart hinges.

As near as I've been able to figure '71 was the last year with the slot that allowed the hood to be lifted off. '72-'75 had hinges that could be pulled apart but not slotted so to remove the hood you had to remove one hinge part from the cowl or hood. I know '76 and up they could not come apart at all. The ones from '76 up will work but are not like the originals. Thinner material too, not near as beefy as the early's.
Which part do you need? I may have spares.....

Thanks. I think I will definitely just find one off the board, which is my first choice anyway. It appears that both the '70 and '71 do not have the slots; I had to unbolt at least one side from the cowl to remove the hood.

Here is what they look like. My original '70 driver's side is on the right. The one on the left is a pass side off of a '71. I would just use the '71 except the hood pin is broken off inside that hinge and rusted stuck. Tried a BFH and punch, no joy. I am going to stop by the machinist today and see if he can press it out. Otherwise, I'm needing the pass side cowl portion of the hinge without slots as pictured on the left:

Why not just drill out the old one? I guess it would be a lot easier with a drill press. But I think it could be done satisfactorily with a hand drill. I had the wrong year hinges on mine. I scored a set off a 75. They look like the ones in your picture. I am going to drill the pins out on mine and replace them with the shank from a bolt.

edit; I am replacing the pins because they are worn and loose.

Got it fixed. Took it to the machinist and put it on his big press. It strained and groaned, but eventually came out. So, since we're on the subject, anyone know the transition year for the slot to non-slot?

Does MOP's '68 have slots? I checked my Eugene parts, but the hood hinges are missing entirely.

Might be good info to add to the VIN project or spotter's guide.

They're not missing, you just don't have them. ;)

Squinting at the Ren II ad, it looks like they aren't slotted pull-apart hinges.

    Smart alec. ;)

Yup, I know. The one on the left above used to be "Baja Yellow." The one on the right is '70, so that puts the date to at least '69. So, since they're not "missing," did Eugene have slots?

I'm squinting at MOP's '68 right now, and they also look non-slotted to me:

Eugene's (now Linus's) hinges are slotted.

I have the hinges that were on Linus when purchased, they come apart but are not slotted. I figured they were later hinges but they may well have been stock.

MOP's are slotted but I don't believe they're original since they are chrome. Could've been chromed I guess.

Seems like my '69 Commandos hinges were slotted, friend swiped 'em for his Scrambler when I was selling it, before I knew a friend was buying it, honest!

Spoon's '71 Commando has the same style hinges Linus did when I brought it home.

So maybe '70 is the transition year, then. Worthy of a spot in the tech pages, or useless trivia?

Interesting to note it I'd say. We detail wipers, windshield frames, turn signals, side markers, why not hood hinges too?

Slotted or non? This would be after Jason's '70 with a '69 build date.
