Can anyone tell me what is the best replacement gas tank for 1974 Jeep cj 5
Are they all made the same and by the same place in China and the US company that buys it just attaches their name to it, I have a hard time believing that one tank made in China is different or better than another or am I wrong about this?

I would honestly guess they are all the same. The stamping details sure look similar. Unless differences can actually be proven I would just go with what's cheapest.

I would recommend getting the $60 one from RockAuto, use red kote inside, and then throw some durable black paint on the outside. Before you do all that you'll have to grind the corners round like the original so it can be installed from the bottom of the frame.

My advice isn't time tested yet but I'm feeling good about it so far.

I’ll wager one manufacturer makes all the tanks due to licensing.
I just went through this with new front fenders and regardless who you buy them from they’re all made by the same company in Taiwan.
I put a new gas tank in my CJ last year from Qudratech and it was actually pretty good quality and had a nice light gray painted exterior. There were no markings on the tank whatsoever so who know the manufacturer?

Well after further research I went with a Spectra tank, 102.00 at rock auto, they want 60.00 for a Sherman, I have not been able to figure out where the Sherman tanks are made, only ones I could find were too heavy and mfg during the war, the Spectras as you said are mfg in Canada, US and Mexico? They are the only ones that I can tell from pictures alone that are galvanized, and the spectras are the only ones that are leak tested.

Seems well reasoned. I would have bought the Spectra tank too. It's going to be silver painted, not galvanized. That's what the description says.

I would hope that it is painted galvanized?

Although seems like it’s not if they had to paint it!
