Solved - it did turn out to be a bad fuel pump. Gas in the oil was the indicator. I ended up blocking off the port where the mechanical pump installs and made the switch to an electric pump with all new lines. Very happy with how it's running now. Thanks everyone for the help.

So what electric did you go with? My Jeep needs tons of cranking and choke applied after shutting down for more than an hour. Runs good otherwise. I am almost positive the exhaust being next to the fuel pump has done in the fuel pump rubber. I got a replacement non-china pump but before I put it in I need to take a look at the eccentric. If the eccentric is bad I plan to go electric but not sure which to go with. I guess ideally I would put one low on the frame so it stays flooded and cool - but which one?

Electric pump function best if they are placed near the tank outlet and they push fuel to the carb.

I got the edelbrock micro pump for about $50 at my local O'Reiley. It is mounted on the frame away from the exhaust and behind the transmission support for protection. Very happy with it so far. They say it's self regulating but time will tell if I need to add a physical regulator in line. It primed the whole line in about 2 seconds and haven't lost prime in 3 days.
