Looking at a T18/Dana 20 from a '79 Cherokee. This has the LONG input shaft and wally adapter between the case and the bellhousing. Is it possible to remove the input shaft, turn it down on a lathe and cut to the correct CJ length? This seems like it wouldn't be too hard, but not sure that I've seen anybody else talk about this as a solution.

I had a long input T18. I found a short input shaft that I swapped in. A good machine shop should be able to modify the long shaft for what you need.

Find a shorter replacement if you can...........the OD where the splines are is around 1.125" as the shaft goes to the rear towards the Tranny it gets smaller in diameter...........no place to cut new splines.

Ahhh. That's why they don't do that. Guy's asking $275 for trans, t-case, and bellhousing. Might do it still, especially if he'll budge.

I was stuck with a similar situation when I did my t-18 swap. Luckily the junk yard I was at had an old t-tag ford with a t18 in it....It had the shaft input shaft. I just used a few parts from each tranny and pow.....bob's your uncle. . I think he charged me 300 for both trannys.

Thanks for the ideas. There's a twin stick '78 CJ trans that I think I can get for $500, if that is the case, that's the way I'll go. Although there is a 2x4 Ford for $200, so if I could wheel and deal the FS with t-case and the Ford I might save a little.

Yep 2wd ford T18/19 and J-truck T18/Dana 20 combo then throw in some Dana 18 sticks you now have a good weekend project.
Just remember to machine the Ford input bearing retainer to GM spec.

I went the Novak Adapters route with my 79 Cherokee T-18 and Dana 20 when I mated it to my 225 V-6. I also did the hydraulic clutch at the same time. Couldn't be happier with the results. I think mine is from about page 22 and then back on my build.

If I wasn't using an AMC motor with the later bellhousing that is easy to adapt I would probably go that way as well. This is for my '79 CJ-5 with an AMC 360. I have a 3.0 Mercruiser and an SM465 I plan on hooking to a Dana 18 and I will go either Novak or AA for that. I'd like to do this cheaper, and the Ford/FSJ setup should be about half the adapter cost.

I say that but you know how things have a way of increasing.... but it should still be cheaper.
