ok i know this has been covered before but i could not find it by searching.

is there a difference between late CJ and early 5 frames. other then width and lenght.

i saw that 4WDHardwear has heavy duty steering box mounts but of course they are for the late CJs. i looked at it and it looks to me to be 1/2 plate welded together and it just fits over and under the frame and bolts on with at least 4 good sized bolts. im not sure if i want to go that route since i could not set my steering box in the way i want to to keep it out of the rocks. but it is finished so there is more time saved there.

The framerails on my '71 are 2x3" open C-channel. Boxed only in the engine bay.
I think AMC started fully boxed frames in '76. I don't know the dimensions of those.

I looked more closely at my frame last night. It's 2x3" from the frame horns to about the axle bend in the rear. From there, I think it stays 2" wide but the height changes. At one spot it looks to be around 5 to 6" tall, in the area just before the rear axle hump.

I believe you are looking at the replacement bracket for the '76-82 CJs? After '75, Jeep used a stamped steel bracket that bolted to the frame. From '72-75, they used a cast bracket, again bolting to the frame. Both of these designs depend a lot on the big, flat front crossmember in front of the radiator for rigidity.
