Cut, drill and tap the 2 pieces, add matching diameter steel rod in between that is threaded the same, weld and grind clean. Maybe use repro thumb screws if you want to save the originals.

Look on McMaster Carr to see if they have a male/female threaded standoff in that thread size.

So the roll cage is in the way?....................whats the side look like opposite the side shown here? I assume it's just threaded 3/8" or whatever size into that other bar that goes up ?

So just thinking out loud you could take a threaded piece of stock or thread your own and weld or fabricate the thumb screws on to it.............that would come in from the outside through the already threaded part and then on the opposite side take a piece of bar stock with the same dimensions as the back side of the factory threaded Thumb screw less the thumb portions and instead of having a male thread just duplicate the steps of whats behind the thumb screw and do a female thread inside.......On the opposite end the length of that threaded portion would have to be controlled for length so that this side would not tighten up before the opposite side did it's tightening job.................bottom line you should be able to keep all the original parts intact without cannibalizing anything...........at least I think it will work.............the dimensions just have to be known and correct.........Got to be someone up that way with a lathe? would not take that much to build those.

    Here's what I came up with...$6 later...Works for me. (y)

So that clears the cage with the windshield closed?

    Is that design "Patent Pending"?

So is that piece just to tighten and loosen the pivot joint so that it can extend or fold and then hold in place? Looks like a good solution if the shaft of the bolt gives enough clearance to fit between the roll bar and windshield when its folded down (or should I say non-ventilating position).

    Yes.

It works, but it's tight and the hinge will definitely rattle against the roll bar. I'm not sure what the final solution will be?

The first open setting (if you use the divots as intended) provides a gap at the bottom of the windshield and frame is 4"!

In the closed position I can barely clear roll bar with my modification.

I'm thinking it would be best to grind off the nut on outer hinge bracket and weld one onto the inner hinge bracket. The hinge would clear the roll bar a little better, but I'd have to loose the wing nut adjuster and settle on a hex head.

I'm sure one doesn't open and shut a ventilating windshield enough to care?

Your roll cage looks like it is butt welded together at that bend. Id improve on the roll cage and make it work around the windshield. For your own safety. Just my .02

That is where I was going.........without cannibalizing anything.........build a new threaded wingnut to come in from the outside.......then make a stepped threaded nut shaped like the rear portion of the original wingnut , without the thumb turning portion with a female thread inside........that would fit in that cavity on the hinge arm inside...........Should work......what does the outside hinge arm threaded portion look like?

Yep... I've considered that a few times. I was going to redo it with a local guy, but we had trouble coordinating our time. The joints really bug me, it's probably useless "protection".

Ok...I'll admit it's not my finest work or the best solution, but this is what I came up with. It's so tight that anything adjustable isn't really working. Basically I'll have 2 settings...Open & closed. I found that about 2" is all that I want opened at the bottom.

If I would have been smart...I could have drilled the 1/4" hole smaller and cut threads into the bracket I made. Then I could have welded a wingnut onto the longer 1/4"-28 threaded screw and made it quicker to change from open to closed or visa versa. Oh well...Maybe I'll start over and call this a prototype. I could make the bracket just a bit longer and add another upper hole in order to have a couple of opened settings.

A wingnut on the inside would have been an easy way to un-thread the upper screw. In the closed position, my little bracket will just hang down (and probably rattle).

Since I'm not planning on using wipers...Maybe that little hole at the top will make it easier to see the traffic signal?

looks good, but umm you will want wipers. Its no fun being worried about driving on a cloudy day.

I had the jiggle fuse block till wipers worked variety on the blazer. Not fun, its fixed now.

A thought you might find interesting, utility wiper motors are similar to the Bosch style. Like in the electric golf carts, I wonder if one could find a motor that would fit. The universal wiper motor from walcks is terrible in my opinion.
