I would like to pose a question to the sages here. I have been haunting this forum for about a year while fixing up my 74 CJ5 but up till now have been able to find all the info I have needed. I am installing a Shell Valley fiberglass body and I need to know what you consider the minimum clearance between the firewall and engine to be? The clearance on my wife's 83 is about an inch. With the tub even with the rear cross member the rear axles are centered in the rear arches but the firewall is just touching the top rear edge of the head/valve cover. Does anyone know what the minimum distance I can get away with would be? Thank you in advance for any help.

Just my opinion but .....somewhere around 1/2 to 3/4" minimum.
As you noted the 1" is ideal................

Thank you gentlemen for the info. I had a senior moment. I was using the wrong body mounts to set the spacing. When I leveled the body to the frame I had good clearance on the firewall.
