OK, I've been working all day on trying to fit a YJ set of bars into the 72 with no luck, the back fits ok but the front bottom is the problem, it turns in about 3in and causes me to push the seats all the way forward I cant sit in it like that.

Which should you guys think I should go with, I dont want to go with the fenderwell type it came with so should I try and cut-reweld the lower front halves to go out and fit, or find a set of cj5 bars that go down like these? I think the early 80's bars are like those but not sure. I want to find a bar I can go in now and be able to add a front hoop to later. I just cant afford a custom cage atm unless somebody knows of an alternative that isnt going to break the bank

    Thx guys

IMHO you're never going to get enough room for your seats trying to get a rollbar down between the wheelhousing - unless you have very short legs.

Why not a fenderwell mount? They can be tied into the frame from underneath if you're not comfy with the support they have.

I rolled my 5 with a fenderwell bar + a front hoop just bolted to the tub up front. Went 1.25 times over, saved my neck and the w/s frame w/no visible tweaking to the bar or body.

Oh let me tell you a steering wheel in the gut is how it is atm if I keep it in there.

Well, either way the fiberglass body has a bit to do with how I mount this all up. I rather like the split layback style over the fenderwell type, but it may be my only way to go,

If it wasnt for the turning in of the front I could get the seats to go just inside it, I just dont know how well a "butt" weld would be. aka chop off the lower part just at the bend and weld in a stright piece of tube. I hope you guys know what I am talking about.

Does anyone know if the early 80s 5s bar is like the 7s and YJs?
Ive never seen one in person but the tub I bought had one because I saw it outside when I picked up the tub, at the time I didnt ask about how it fit. I only can see where it had been mounted and that was right at the edges of the tub just inside. if a factory 5 one is like that then thats what I am looking for unless I can join a stright piece on the lower front of this and keep it sturdy, then attach all of that to tie into the frame.

Here is a picture of a set of what I have, you can see the turn in on the lower front, question is if I chop it right above this what would be the best way to join a straight piece? should I weld an inner piece first or just weld the two together

A smaller piece of tube slip-fit inside the existing tube would help align the two pieces you're welding and would give additional material to strengthen the joint. Butt joint will work if you're confident of your weld - just leave a small gap and fill completely. :)
