Hi all, I recently brought the 1973 Cj5 farm jeep to town where I have time to replace wiring, lights, etc. The jeep has no top and never was street/road driven and the windshield was never up. Now when I drive it around with the windshield up, the exhaust fumes via the wind eddy effect whips up over the tailgate and is strong smelling leaving my clothes reeking with exhaust fumes.
There are no exhaust leaks, just circulating fumes from the tail pipe. Any suggestions for a cure?
    Thanks, DanL

The condition of the engine is a big factor in this very common problem. If the engine is running overly rich, or is getting to be a tired engine and burns a bit of oil, the problem of the exhaust smell is ten fold. There have been lots of suggestions for how to route the exhaust pipe, but in the end it would help a little bit not solve the issue completely. The only time I don’t smell of exhaust is when I have the top on or drive with the windshield down (like you mentioned) My engine is starting to show it’s age though.

You have the factory emissions devices? That will help. The TSM describes what you should have.

The original tail pipe exits at the drivers rear corner, and the tip points down at the very end. I'm sure that Jeep picked that shape and location to work the best of any possible.

Thanks for your suggestions. I have no original emissions equip But the exhaust pipe is original with tail pipe pointed down. For farm use, I have no problems. However, I would like to ride around some in town with street clothes not smelling like exhaust.
    Thanks again, DanL

Emissions equipment in '73 was not very complicated. You could fit a catalytic convertor (although '73 did not require it) and the exhaust would sweeten quite a lot. I'd guess it's the hydrocarbons that smell, and air injection plus a cat would cut those way way down.

What's the inside of the tailpipe look like? Sounds like you're running *way* rich.
